Small screw top aluminium tin with holes drilled. Fill with ground coffee, put into pan of water and bring to the boil. Makes two cups.

How about doing this with a Vaseline tin with the outside sanded to bare metal? Smaller, lighter?

Potentially wouldn't hold enough grounds to make a decent strong cuppa, Ben. Wouldn't be enough room for them to move, either.

Where did you get the tin, Ray?

EBay £1 each or cheaper if you buy a few. Holes need to be quite fine otherwise the grounds escape.

Great effort Ray, been trying to work something out myself.
What size holes did you found worked well?

I can't remember what size it was but it came from a model shop and is currently in the attic with my other modeling tools. I'll check it out when I have some time.

That's one step away from a coffee bag

Yes but sadly its attached to my new borah bivy bag !

Despite being a coffee snob I'm happy to drink posh instant 2g sachets on bivy trips. Millicano is available in multipacks and does the job

Me too Ian. I would rather drink nice stuff but am perfectly willing to go for instant.

*edit.
I should add that I'm not knocking the coffee tin, I like the idea a lot but am too lazy to deal with even such a simple thing

You could also just fill a couple of these up before heading out.

Well said Dave. I should have added that too.

The coffee tin looks good system, I'm just too lazy to take one on a trip out.

Haha. I suppose I mean that its important to save time and energy to spend on your priorities.

At home I have some serious coffee equipment and am happy to invest the time there ;)

And yes you're welcome anytime.

After claiming I was too lazy, I now want one of these of for an upcoming couple of trips.

Have you managed to find one without the EPE / Wadding lined lid?
(or did you try to remove it?)

Look on ebay under make up stuff, these tins are just alu, no liners. I used a 30ml size but 50-60ml should fit a 450ml or larger cup.

See I love real coffee and I see the attraction here but surely u have to carry fresh coffee and milk if you wanna drink a few cups? I'd rather just take a couple of mixed up sachets is it not easier? And less bulk

I'd be carrying coffee anyway, whether it's for an Aeropress or a mokka pot. I don't take milk when I'm away, just a bit of sugar which, again, I'd be carrying anyway. This seems like a cracking idea (not that I've got a drill that'll get that fine, so I can't make one up myself), and would probably work better than my other go-to which is coffee bags, though they tend to brew a bit weak for me.

And instant isn't really coffee, to be honest. It's an acidic brown sludge that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Did mine with a small drawing pin.

I got my drill bits from a model shop, using a drawing pin is a good idea and probably quicker.
