Bear Bones App'?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

I was coaching a girl the other week who designs apps. She reckoned there should be a Bear Bones app, so if such a thing was to exist, what would you have it do?

Yeah, database of the weird outdoor stuff we do.

e.g. gps routes, kit weights (more bivvy bag/stove/equipment based rather than bike parts focus)

But we can also user submit stuff to it.

Also an idea, spot tracking or similar if any of us are on big rides...

*I suspect some of these have been done before, but I haven't really looked.

Oh yeah, and maybe a tapatalk type interface or whatever onto the forum.

Brilliant idea. What about route database where you put in the desired location, duration of ride, average speed and technical difficult and the app recommends a route with water sources, pubs and suggestions for overnight bivy spots?

Keep thinking tyre selector - put in the location and your riding style and the app draws weather data so you get an idea of the conditions where you're going. Probably recommend Conti x-Kings for me all the time though.

Tarp configuration - take a photo of the desired pitch site and it pulls weather data and give you recommendations for how to pitch the tarp. Won't work in the dark of course and likely to show you an a-frame 9 times out of 10.
I'm just going outside ...

Define App?

A standalone application from an app store or a 'web app' that optimizes content for mobile browsers?

If the former then will it be for Apple/Android/WinMob? If the latter then you'll reach a wider audience but be dependent on 3G/Wifi which might be a bit inconvenient mid-ride.... ;)

Define App?
(think) I mean Apple / Android type thing ... in all honesty, I've only joined the 21st century in the last few months, so I'm quite ignorant of such things ;)

Scan bar code in a shop and then the result is used as a search term for the forum and/or the reviews section on the new web site.

Is this to find bivvy spots or put err... people looking for a "2-man bivvy night" together?

You want something where the masses add the data, you don't want to shoulder all the admin.

A collection of all he stuff we all use on the go or planning.
User collected info for great bivy spots, water taps, remote shops and great cafés.
Bivy info could be classed say as sheltered, great view, or safe hidden location.
You could even charge a small fee for a business insertion

Would take a while to get a lot of UK data but would be ace to pull up a map on the go and get help.
Commonly used routes/races like BB200, Cairngorm loops, Highland trail, C2C would fill up with data quickly and be a godsend.
