I love crisps, but one gets to a certain time of life and realises they're not the healthiest of sports nutrition

Then one evening pickled eggs entered my world: low in saturated fat, high in protein, it seems the perfect accompaniment to route planning and hydrating.

It also seems squishing them up in a bag of crisps is "a thing" nowadays and, according to some sources in the Bristol area, are available pickled in chilli, garlic and other tantalising varieties.

But I've yet to find a true scotch egg, marinated in single malt whisky... :-bd

What else am I missing?

(Yes, I was in the Black Lion with Reg last night  )

I have a Yorkshire friend who has fond memories of when she was a kid getting treated to a pickled egg in a bag of crisps back in the day! In Nepal a "packed lunch" in the remote regions was 2 hard boiled eggs, in the shell, wrapped in a Chapatti with a bit of foil round it. Surprisingly filling and sustaining it was too!

The concept appeals to me, but to be honest I don't think I'd ever risk buying one.

Most bar staff aren't known for their adherence to any sort of hygiene standards.

Having indeed been in said Black Lion at the time the crime occurred, after some consideration I would say that pickled eggs are probably a treat best enjoyed solo. Possibly in a hermetically sealed room  .

Not sure I could face one.
My wife used to work behind the bar in the pottergate tavern in Norwich many moons ago. During a heat wave someone threw a pickled egg through the blades of the big metal fan that was minding it's own business oscillating on the bar.
Surface to say the smell was pretty potent and long lasting.

I'm a fan, converted by the Missus and her side. Mainly a delicacy at Christmas. We've even taken to pickling our own chickens eggs. Recommend cheese n onion. Avoid salt n vinegar.

20 years ago, or so, I worked in a small control room with four other guys. In a spirit of fun, one night shift, I took a jar of 'em in and we ate them all. Took some cheese too.

Imagine - a dozen or so, between 5 blokes. All that fart-gas :o You could have cut the air with a knife by the time the day shift came in...

My local doesn’t do food other than crisps, but he’s more than happy for you to take a take away in :-bd Do feel guilty sometimes as a chippy does stink the place out but the owner doesn’t bat an eyelid  The chippy tends to do good business once one person has been over!

Might have to step it up with a curry one day…

Pah - what you need is a Chinese century egg or black egg. Up to 1,000 years old. Crisps wouldn't last half as long..........

I was once the Dalgety Bay Cricket Club pickled egg eating champion. Those were the days... 🤣
Haven't had one in ages, might have to sort that out.

And it has been said such legendary achievements were the inspiration for the scene in Cool Hand Luke. Boner's influences spreads far and wide.
