Dave's Bikepack Maps

Post by Dave Barter »

This has been a real journey to create a new render of my Garmin maps. You cannot know how many technical hurdles I've had to jump to get to this point as almost every library has changed since I did this a few years back. I found horrible errors in Ordnance Survey data and a number of bugs in the open source libraries that kept crashing my build.

I now have a release at https://github.com/citizenfish/bikepack ... 024-beta-1 please feel free to download and test these. Let me know what changes you'd like made as I'll be working on tidying them up over the next month. You should see a lot more data on these maps than my last set as I've included Openstreetmap data as well.

DO NOT read the code as that is a mess and it also needs tidying up.

Good work Dave, well done. First idiot question - is there a way of opening a .img file on a desktop? Or is it GPS only?

To open on a desktop you need Garmin Basecamp installed. Then copy the gmapsupp.img file to a directory called Garmin on a USB stick or SD card. Basecamp will then open the map automatically

Plug 530 into computer using usb cable. Drag the file gmapsupp.img to the Garmin file. Then enable the map in map settings on the unit.

Plug 530 into computer
Done that but it's not listed in my maps when I get to the list( it's definwtly in the Garmin folder as I can see it listed on the PC

No idea if I am the issue here ( never tried to add maps to this unit. If you really want ( but I assume you have tested this) I can put it on my Etrex to double check it works.

won't object if you don't support morons and prefer to swear at them :-bd

My instructions were not clear enough. It needs to go in the Garmin Folder on the 530

Edited my response then saw your post but it is in that folder as I downloaded then transferred( and just double checked) . When I get to select maps, on the unit, only Garmin ( free) ones are listed

I have added OS to other garmims but never maps to this ( ie not a total moron but not highly skilled either)
This day got off to a good start so I will just go make my new dynamo hub tubeless as that is bound to work.

Ta seems a number of different ways into maps via profile ( or via navigation) but it's just not listed there.
Tried synching with Garmin but made no difference.( tubeless worked first time though)

I'm also having issues Dave, it's not recognised by Garmin, it's also a lot smaller than the v1 version. Will try re-downloading etc and setup again incase.

It should be smaller. I’ve only tested in Basecamp

The newly updated file should fix the issue with it not showing on devices. I need to sort out instructions for using it on Edge series devices as it needs some more jiggery pokery but I've run out of time due to work so support will be scant.

The file will show as "OSM street" on devices and in Basecamp something else I need to fix

Delete the old file gmapsupp.img and replace with the download gmapsupp_bp.img

On a Garmin 530 create a new profile and disable all maps apart from OSM street map

Set detail to "Most" and enable "Show Contours"

I may remove the shops/pois that show in towns, let me know what you think of this

Yep, dumped it on to the edge 1000's sd and it's seen straight away in basecamp.

Looks totally different colours wise to the v1, is it based on a different base map?

I've included a lot more Openstreetmap data (have you spotted gates ;-)) and I also incorporated elements of the Openfietsmap style that I liked. I'm really happy to mess with it as it's pretty easy to change.

Please in no way think me ungrateful for the amazing work you have done on it, but is there any. way to have the new data with the old look?

I enclose one one of my local haunts QE Park in both the V1 and V2024 maps from basecamp, same detail level and zoom. Yes there is more data in the 2024, but I find it so much more difficult to read than the V1 version.

The reason I origianlly asked about updates is that IMHO the v1 is the best map set I have every had, so much easier to read on Basecamp, an edge, heck even on a Fenix it's good.

Here is the V1 Screenshot,

V2024 is the next post.
