All day comfortable, do-it-all waterproof trousers?

Post by yourguitarhero »

I'm trying to find a new pair of trousers.
I'd like it if they could handle hillwalking and cycling in heavy rain as well as be something you can just wear as your day to day trousers.
I guess that means that they have a soft lining and aren't 'plasticky'.
I have a pair of Madison Zenith Men's 4-Season DWR Trousers that are only really waterproof on the arse. The fronts of the legs soak through in about 20 minutes of rain. Shame as otherwise, they are nice - stretchy and comfy enough to wear as normal trousers and easy to cycle or walk in.

Been looking at the Paramo Cascada and Velez trousers.

Was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions?

I have Decathlon All Mountain trousers which are excellent -if somewhat a weird fit-ala Decathlon -and definitely 'bikey'
I also have some.Madison Roam DWR trousers which are lighter and could pass for hiking trousers. :-bd

I've a pair of paramo velez trousers but they aren't that great in the rain, walking or cycling - as the fabric stretches across your thigh as you pedal or walk uphill, they tend to leak - an oddity of the paramo system. Super comfortable and warm so ideal for the snow but for normal winter cycling cycling I go with shell over trousers.

I'll be over the moon if someone comes up with a pair of trousers that fits the above specification. I will go out and buy them immediately!

I'm new to cycling but spent 30 years looking for trousers like this for hill walking. Without finding anything that came close!

Trousers described as waterproof were all way to hot for doing anything energetic and all seemed to leak after 45 minutes or so unless I was standing still.

The best ones I found were from Rohan. They were expensive and pretty good if I remember rightly but hot so I could only wear them in the middle of winter. They still sell what they describe as lightweight waterproof trousers but I don't know how they might compare to the ones I bought about 25 years ago.

In the end I settled for Rohans bags (which they still sell) and Gortex overtrousers which I usually put on just a bit too late. Fortunately they dry faster than anything else I have found. I'm told eVent is better than Goretex but don't have first hand experience.

I'll keep watching in the hope that someone has a better solution.

I often forget I'm waering my OMM Kameleika (spelling?!) trousers. Although you'll need some leggings under them as they would feel a bit odd next to the skin all day. They also look kinda normal in a technical way.

Hmm, already have over trousers but was hoping there is something that would do it all.

Disappointing about those paramo ones, they seemed like they could be good. A pal has one of their jackets which is very nice and works well in bad conditions.

Anyone have experience of the Sprayway All Day Rain trousers or Craghoppers Stefan ones? They seem to do the job but not sure how waterproof they are.

I’ve got the non cycle version of Rab Cinder (Rab Kinetic 2.0) which uses the same ‘proflex’ material.

They were brilliant for a short while but leak like the proverbial sieve now. When wet, the material also feels horrible next to the skin.

I really like Rab stuff but would be dubious about buying anything which uses their proflex material again

Thanks for all the replies.

Sadly, no closer to choosing something!

It's weird as I have a pair of Morvelo bib tights which are totally waterproof and a DHB long sleeved top as well. They're comfy and stretchy.
Not sure why there aren't baggier versions using whatever materials they use

I've had a pair of the Craghoppers Stefan trousers for a couple of years now.
They're ok in light to moderate rain for a while, but in heavy rain they wet out, doesn't seem to be any DWR coating, even from new.
They let water in through the fly zip which can be quite bad if wearing a waterproof jacket that the water runs off onto that area, as is common nowadays with shorter length waterproof jackets.
They can be quite sweaty in anything other than cold conditions, I don't believe their quoted 40k breathability rating.
The stretchy mesh lining can make them difficult to put on as your feet catch on the mesh on the way through.
Having said all that, they are quite good for a showery, windy, winter's day with thermals on underneath.

Still mulling this over.

Saw some OMM Kameilka (sp?) ones on their refurb site which I ordered to try but turns out they were out of stock....

Anyone have experience with the Patagonia Storm ones? https://eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/product/ ... 25030.html

I recently (when they were half price) bought a pair of Altura ridge thermal waterproof trousers.

https://www.altura.co.uk/products/altur ... of-trouser

The outer is a fully taped waterproof fabric which is not crispy / crunchy but a bit softer. I would say somewhere between the feel of a softshell and 'normal' WP fabric. They have a floating micro fleece inner 'short' at the top which is lovely and warm and goes down to just above the knee.

I am not a padded short person generally so wear these to ride in with just my merino boxers and so far have been warm.

I have tried them out for about 2 hours of medium to very heavy rain and wind and I stayed dry inside.

They arent perfect at 125 quid, but for 70 or 80 I would certainly buy them again.

A few minor irritations,
non adjustable ankle so those of us who want our waterproof trousers to cover the top of boots will be disappointed, your boot holes fill right up with water
Vents aren't terribly effective, but help breathe.
Would have preferred the fleece past the knee to warm my old joints

Not perfect, but I like them, would recommend.

So, after mulling this over for a while, I have just received a pair of second hand Paramo Velez trousers in the post.
They seem closest to what I'm looking for and if they don't do the job I can sell them on for no/low cost.

Will test them out by riding to work (20 miles) in the rain. And while, sadly, I have to go to work today, it's not raining! Can't imagine that will be true for too long though.
