The Dullest Square
Apparently this is the dullest OS square, or rather, the one with the least features on a map.
Which got me wondering, what does the square look like on your local map with the least features ? I’ll dig my maps out and have a look soon…

Re: The Dullest Square
I think if this same grid square was seen using the 1:25000 series instead of the 1:50000 it would be more interesting!
The 25k series shows field boundaries etc so there would be less 'white space'.

Here's mine
There were quite a few to choose from on my OS sheet, perhaps we should say it needs to include some land? In which case, this one

Errr, yeah, land based grid squares
I’ve got a lot of marsh land and sand banks on my map but I’m trying to locate a land based square
This may be the least featured one (obviously the writing doesn’t count), near Cholmondeley Castle) OS 117

Re: The Dullest Square
I've had a visit to that Ousefleet square on my list for ages but never got round to it. One day.
Good theme for a trip though

Re: The Dullest Square
I'm sure I've seen a previous reference to that Ousefleet one where the power line just crosses into it.
Round my way, I reckon SK2683* and SK2973* are about as featureless as I'll get.
*County boundaries don't count as physical features, do they?

Re: The Dullest Square
Not got access to my maps at the moment but a good game would be to guess where it is before checking.
Living where we do pretty well every square will have a hill in it! Being cruel(or honest), you could say that any square that is all urban/ built up is, by definition, as dull as can be.
I’m going to guess at one of the moorland squares on the Pennines

Not the most featureless, but I'd go for SK3990 for the dullest?!Bearlegged wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 3:10 pm I'm sure I've seen a previous reference to that Ousefleet one where the power line just crosses into it.

Re: The Dullest Square
How many squares does Ipswich cover? That has to be pretty dull
Re: The Dullest Square
We have a few flat fields which are dull and within the same distance we have glaciers. I knew this square, so the choice was easy.
Standing there (especially in winter) is all but dull.

Reg mentioned that square to me a couple of months ago, have wondered about heading up, probably next year now.

Can’t work out whether it will be an anti-climax when you get there or not…?!Blackhound wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 8:09 pm Reg mentioned that square to me a couple of months ago, have wondered about heading up, probably next year now.

It'll be an exercise in making your own entertainment. Kev and myself only had a whip and a top, and a clothes-peg army, when we were kids in Derby, so we're used to it. It were 'ard in them there days.voodoo_simon wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 1:29 pmCan’t work out whether it will be an anti-climax when you get there or not…?!Blackhound wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 8:09 pm Reg mentioned that square to me a couple of months ago, have wondered about heading up, probably next year now.
Since there's nowt there, you'll sit for hours on end staring across the flatness having lots of deep and profound thoughts. Probably a life-changing moment. Or something.
I reckon it'd be best visited on a winter's day, frost on the fields, sun low on the horizon, chilly breeze penetrating your BB jersey.

"Winter". In fact just like this. Perfect day out. Surprised nobody's flipped a photo up earlier TBH. Actually I'm going to have a cup of tea and look at it for a few minutes. Meditative that's what it is.

Re: The Dullest Square
Is the grid square served by a single-platform station with one train a week (in one direction only, of course )?

Re: The Dullest Square
I've actually found quite a few almost blank squares up here - just an odd contour or drainage ditch
