What summer mat is flavour of the year?

Post by fatbikerbill »

For several years now I have stuck with the single mat for year round use.

An exped winter insulated mat. Fabulous, comfy but clearly bulkier than needs to be for summer use.

I am thinking three quarter length.

What do you guys recommend please?

I use an Uberlight for 3 seasons and rate it. As long as the ground isn't already frozen when I set up camp it's been good for me. I use a full length wide mat, I don't mind carrying a little extra weight for a good night's sleep.

One of the lighter Exped mats would get my vote. They have changed their lineup but the equivalent of the old Hyperlight would be good enough for 3 seasons in the UK. The Hyperlight weighs about 350g and packs just a bit bigger than a water bottle.

I'm with Bob about the Hyperlight or whatever they are now called. Stu reviewed one (not sure if it isn't the one I actually have now):

If it's truly 'summer only' then how about something from Klymit? Inertia X-lite short is 152g and not too spendy.

or maybe even something like this from Vango ... heavier but probably also much comfier

I thought insulated mats were not like sleeping bags in that they were not really warming more they stopped you cooling v the earths mass - basically a high r value is not really warmer than a low one [ well a bit not noticeably like a winter sleeping bag would be in summer] - is this not correct ?

i use my thermarest neo air all year round.
I dont really, or at least try my best, to avoid sub zero camping but have still done it.

Absolutely right John but i think Phil's perhaps looking to reduce weight / bulk?

Thanks all,

I do wonder why I'm always called Phil here but heho my brother calls me David so that is not confusing at all!

The klymit looks very well priced and for it's odd looks gets good reviews.

As for insulation in mats, no they aren't warming but they definitely stop you freezing your ass off. Used my exped winter well below zero many times.

I am looking more for space and weight saving for summer only use.

I’ll be honest but I’ve always seen fatbikerphil rather than fatbikerbill but now I type both together, I’m not sure why

Love the only fools link.

I see the confusion now. To make it worse I am a fat biker fraud. Hardly touched mine since I got a cotic solarismax.
