Given the superb weather I've decided that some light weight shorts may be in order. Nearly all the cycling stuff I've looked at is either pretty heavy looking (so no different to what I already have) or comes with an attached liner/pad (which I don't wear).

I've started looking at general outdoor shorts, walking, running, etc but many seem to be cotton which I'm thinking won't really be ideal .... so, can anyone suggest any light weight shorts, above knee length rather than 'just covers your arse' length would be great?

The only think I've seen so far that might fit the bill are Montane Terra shorts.

Oh yeah I think I have a pair of Animal Free style shorts which are very similar that have never been worn. I bought 2 pairs in a sale (was told they came up small, which they didn't) then I also promptly lost 20lbs training hard and so they are a bit big. I'll still wear the other pair for commuting but I'm sure I didn't even open the packaging on the second pair. They are a large and suitable for about a 34" waist. I'll check tonight and take a photo if you might be interested.

Rohan Outrider are good. Quite a loose cut, just above knee length, couple of pockets and quick drying stretchy fabric with a lined waistband.

I just bought some Solomon running shorts for precisely this reason. Very light and cool you hardly know you're wearing them. Wore them on Saturday, which was the hottest day of the year so far and my swallocks were fine.

Otherwise I have a thin pair of fox shorts and a very thin pair of endura something's, hum bee super lite or summat...

I tend to roll with lycra and save baggies for winter/looking cool.

I'm more of a roadie though and appreciate lycra for it's efficient qualities (lightweight, quick drying, publicly displaying tackle).

I've got some older versions of Race Face Canucks.. nice and light but I just go with lycra if it's really hot.

At present a pair of cheap ('cos I'm tight) Karrimor runing shorts from Field & Trek look to be winning.

I fully understand the whole lycra thing and the benefits but I do like a bit of air round 'em, if you know what I mean

I've been using a pair of Howies seamless bibshorts recently. they are super comfy.

Rub the old boy with a Alum block, for shorts Haglofs Lizards take some beating. A good waxing helps too
