Bar Bag Lower Restraint

Post by sean_iow »

Building a new winter bike for the commute I needed someway to carry my shirt, trousers etc. on the way in Mondays and the return of the work stuff on Friday. On the 'best' bike the Jones Loops make it easy. I also wanted a bag that would be easy to keep clean, the VX21 of my Apidura takes a while to dry once wetted out. An Altura Vortex (first gen) was bought from eBay as I'll be able to hose it off with the bike. I needed a way to stop the bottom flapping about and also keep it off the cables.

Idea sketched and cut from a bit of 1.6mm mild steel plate

Folded

And painted

Installed under the lower bearing seat.

I had planned to use a bit of 20mm webbing through it but after a trial fit discovered this was more faff than I wanted. Folded up a rectangular ring from a bit of 1.8mm stainless steel wire and fixed to the bag with some velcro

Note that I've also fitted better straps. The ring can simple be slipped over the bracket before fixing the bag to the bars.

Survived this morning's commute. There is some movement but not too much and it keeps the bag off the headtube

I had a similar idea a couple of years ago, making it out of fairly thin aluminium plate meant that it needed to be mounted above and below the headtube to avoid bending when a bar bag was fitted. I also mounted my dynamo rectifier box behind it giving easy access to the switch for charging and light use. It's survived several long trips intact and is still going strong.

Duncan, it was seeing yours that gave me the idea to mount something between the bearing seat and fork crown.
