BB200/300 2022 edition (no spoilers)

Post by whitestone »

Well the files have dropped

The high point of the 300 isn't where any of the guesses on the other thread put it. I've ridden there but not via the approach we'll be taking.

Right, time to find resupply points...

It's pretty thin gruel.

An impressive effort by Stu to devise a route 300km long that passes so few places to buy food.

There's a few options a km or two off-route but really only at 20km and 190km on-route and you are likely to be passing at least some of them during the night/closing hours. Definitely one to be well stocked for...

There's one or two bits I'll definitely be pushing  And that's before I account for tiredness.

So far I've figured on two fords that might be deep, we've certainly done one of them on a previous BB, but from memory they aren't fast flowing (famous last words!). I think I've done most of the last 100km before, not necessarily in this direction but at least it's "known" territory.

Bleh, on current fitness there's no way I make the main supply town on the 200 before everything is closed.

It's going to be a ROUGH 24 hours.

Edit - lol... just seen an Indian takeaway that's open past midnight. Risky, but tempting.

Will be desperately searching for signal at 23:30 to get an order in.

Just thought - the 'honesty cafe' may well be open. Some of you will know of what I speak. I shall ask as to stocking levels.

Sorry if that all sounds a bit code-like.

I am aware. I'm hoping for a hot drink in there at some point on Sunday morning. Happy to absolutely pay through the nose for the privilege if you'd like to pass that on Stu

We just happened to be discussing that yesterday, given the health of one of the volunteers (forgotten her name!) we thought that it might not be.

Give generously? I'll fall to my knees and burst into tears!
Scran stops shaping up nicely. Memo to self - do not have a pint en-route.
Next up, toilet stops.

Not sure that's what was originally meant by TLS, but it does make sense.

I always highlight toilets with a big P in brown on Google maps. The P is for car parks usually, but you get why.

Any indication of distance from the start where this pearl may be found? It'd be a real shame to pass by unaware

To the SE at 143km. it's slightly off route but not by much.

I'm starting to do some maths as to where I need to be, after a certain amount, there's not a great deal. I may consider taking a meal and a very small gas can, it may come in handy.

I thought it might be that. I've only ever had the pleasure once, terrible luck / timing. :(

Would be very, very welcome at that point in the ride!

Bloody hell, what a pallava. OS has decided route editing is only for people with lots of time and patience (i.e. not me) Last year I spent about a half hour doing some selected route editing matching the track with the line on aerial photos - just for the suspected vague bits to make nav easier in the dark. Tried it earlier (updated version  ) and every movement of a point takes around 10-15 seconds so that was a none starter. This was a good feature of the previous version of the OS app so obviously they have made it crap! Anyway managed to do it on good old bike hike, cross referencing to the OS app set to aerial...

Then decided to upload the route and mapping to the App on the phone. Which caused it to crash and resulted in me having to delete and re-install, also losing all my other downloaded maps, yet again 😬 It then took 5 goes to download the map, @ 20 minutes a go. It would get to the end and then go back to the beginning for no reason. Then it worked... It's only a back up but I've no faith in this fecking thing so I think OS may not get any more money from me.

Then I went to upload the GPX to the garmin. It kept changing the file name to one I'd used as a temp file in the OS app when trying to edit it, so somehow the OS app has got into the GPX file (saved from bike hike) and given it it's own name which the Garmin is picking up on 😤

After all of that, riding 300k will be easy!
