Once, there'd always be a piece of kit I wanted - quilt, tarp, bivvy bag or whatever but recently I've realised that there's no longer any kit I lust after. I don't know if that means I'm broken or if it's simply an indication that experience has guided me to a point where I know what works for me and see no reason to deviate from it.

Anyone else reached that point or do you still have the eternal hankering for something new? (jerseys aside)

No, I'm right with you there. You ain't broken (*). Not hankering after anything at all and haven't for ages....

....apart from, fortuitously, being absolutely desperate for a black and red jersey with, oh I dunno, an angry bear on it!

Pretty much with you there Stu. While from time to time there's some gear I might *want* but I don't really need it so after a day or two it drops from the radar. I've settled on some decent kit that puts up with my cack-handednes so have mostly been in replace as needed for a few years now. Anything else is just tinkering.

I'm in a similar boat Stu. There's nothing I feel I want or need at the moment. I have tents and tarps, bikes for every occasion, and lots of bags etc. It's refreshing and frustrating at the same time...

I think it's an age thing, you get to a certain point where you've acquired what you want / need and rarely feel the urge to get anything else. I occasionally contemplate new bikes (and new motorbikes of late) but whereas once I'd have worked myself up to a froth and bought it, these days I tend to get so far and then think - "nah, I'm happy with what I've got"

Similar for my bikepacking kit, haven’t bought anything big that I can remember in a little while

Considering the matter further, I think a bigger issue is worrying how to get rid of some of the stuff one has, rather than worrying about whether one has enough of it .

I've been having thoughts recently where I get a bit panicky about having the burden of responsibility for the stuff that I have.

Having no kit lust is a luxurious position to be in since it normally means you've both tried enough different things to know exactly what you want and you've already got it. I've got a wanted list as long as my arm but my existing stuff refuses to break so I'll keep on making incremental changes and just make the odd purchase to tweak setups. Now I just need to decide what's more important to me, replacing my near 20 year old mat, switching from a bag to a quilt or new bike

OT but if a Webber Yellowstone Octave Mandolin with 20" scale and finished in amber appeared for sale I would give it some very serious thought.

I thought of something- I could do with a gas bottle for my pocket rocket stove.

After that I have no buying to look forward to.....

I'm not sure if it's surprising or not but I was thinking about this again this morning and it dawned on me, just how simple and perhaps even quite basic my favoured kit actually is. There's nothing especially fancy or bling - I'm not saying it wouldn't cost a few quid to replace but most items could be easily substituted for less without too many sacrifices.

I think I put this down to laziness and a desire to keep things as simple as possible - that's one of the reasons why I rarely use a tent; too much faff and complexity

But once you've learnt, then it's really easy. I can put a tarp up in about a minute and take it down quicker. No messing about drying and airing after use and I don't need to be overly concerned about finding a suitable pitch.

My kit lust has recently died too. After trying everything, as seen by my posts on here I Have finally found a tent I'm happy with, The Notch Li, a comfy mat, the STS Etherlight and have a simple bivy bag and tarp set up. My last gasp was a few DCF stuff sacks which are mainly vanity things and that's been it. I look at Trekkit, Sportspursuits etc etc and not even a slight stirring in my loins.
I think I need some sort of Outdoor Equipment Viagra to get me going.

I think many of us here have honed in on *our* preferred/perfect setup. Consider sleeping mats - pretty well everyone is using either an Exped ***Lite or one of the versions of the Thermarest NeoAir with a few using things like the Alpkit Nemo. That's not to say there aren't other makes or models just that the Exped and NeoAir ranges are a known quantity and do their job well enough that there's little need to look elsewhere. I suppose if someone came up with a mat with the performance and weight of say the Exped Hyperlite but at half the price then quite a few might jump ship but to date that hasn't happened.

Shelter? We've three flat tarps, one shaped tarp (the Gatewood) and two tents.

I live in Scotland so tarps are pretty much out due to biting insects (midge and horsefly)

I know people use a tarp + bivvy bag with bug mesh but that just sounds horribly claustrophobic to me and completely missing the point of using a tarp in the first place.

I haven't accumulated enough stuff to be in a position where there isn't something I think I need. Mostly it's lighter, more compact, versions of things I already have, but there's plenty of other things I don't have yet. The nagging suspicion that I'll be able to go further, faster, stronger, longer, if only I had X, Y and Z, wont go for sometime yet. Give me £5K and I think I could probably set myself up with everything I might need.

Not being closed in, sorry thought that was already inferred in my post with the claustrophobic comment

Having to take a meshed bivvy would also reduce the potential weight advantage and simplicity of a tarp on it's own.
