Carry on Camping

Post by Jurassic pusher »

I have just watched this film again, not sure how many times it is now but lots in the last 40 years or so!
No doubt it is not particularly PC but boy it`s funny in a harmless dated kind of fashion, I love the innuendos.
Trying to decide if I identify more with Bernard Breslaw`s character or with Terry Scott`s??
I will tell the wife that she reminds me of Matron when i am feeling brave or stupid!

I’m not sure that a film depicting a middle aged man trying it on with a school aged girl can be considered entirely harmless anymore.

I'm fairly sure none of the girls looked like that when I was at school - I'd have enjoyed it much more if they had. On a serious note, I think we perhaps need a degree of perspective and remember that they're fictional characters and perhaps in a world where depictions of shooting, stabbing, murder, robbery and let's not forget the easy access many people including kids have to pornogrophy, then maybe the carry-on films were quite harmless? If we're going to impose censorship then there's other places I'd start.

School, in this case was Finishing School. In effect, adults/young women. That doesn't negate the large age gap much but it's not paedophilic.

I can't recall many of the Carry On plots but I seem to recall Bernard Breslaw portraying an Indian in Carry On Up The Khyber. That wouldn't be acceptable now.

As dated and distasteful as minstral shows and not made now for reasons so obvious they don't need stating
See also benny hill.for other "harmless" .sexist humour.
As.scots noticed also happy with lazy racial stereotypes and probably some black face in them as well.

I wonder if there was an element of reverse psychology deliberately edited into these films? They often portray a middle-aged man ineptly pursuing a younger woman and making themselves look ridiculous.

Growing up, we often used to watch them when it was raining out and I'd had enough of airfix kits and monopoly. They seemed to be on tv every wet weekend afternoon through the early '80s. Some of the early ones and notably 'Carry on Screaming', had some genuine humor in them, towards the end of the series the comedy seemed to get progressively more clumsy/lazy to me though.

I’m not offended per se just offering another opinion. Although I may have found some humour in Carry On films, or It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Allo Allo etc in the past I couldn’t defend it as innocent harmless fun now.
Stu - A sense of perspective? Sure. However just because something else is bad, different, worse doesn’t mean that comedy based on misogyny, blackface, repressed homosexual, British racial superiority, union bashing and keeping the working class in their place is acceptable anymore. Does it?

No offence taken whatsoever.

I don't find the films offensive either. There was an opinion by John Cleese last year when the BBC were talking about not airing the Fawlty Towers episode, The Germans. In a similar way to the carry-on films, John Cleese points out that the humour is directed towards an unpleasant, racist hotel owner, not the guests.

Not so easy to defend that one

But, I think the cast did point out (in the interviews about the making) that all the mishaps involving Manuel was really Basil's fault. This was because Basil had employed Manuel knowing that his English was poor, just so he could save a few quid on wages. Sounds like some firms around today!

For some reason the satirical programme, Brass Eye came to mind. People got very upset at the "stories" when the real targets were those misrepresenting such events

Beat me to that one 'Routes. One of my fave lines as well.

And who could forget Khyber's 'strawberry mousse' sketch, probably my favourite scene of them all.... Brother Belcher's line "Of course, they're all completely mad, you know" could be a tagline for This Place.

Carry On Up The Khyber was not dissimilar. The locals were plainly showing up the invaders for the buffoons they often were.

As you know, it was actually activated by third assistant director Paul Cowan using some fishing line and a hook  . Such are the improvisations of a low budget.

Cleese was defending the major using the N word and a racist term for asians as mocking the racist which was the Alf Garnett defence and the love thy neighbour( doubt either are seen much nowadays ) . Cleese has more of a point but Manuel is a crudely drawn lazy stereotype that you would not get away with today.

Chris Morris / brass eye was almost entirely people missing his point / proving it but he was very offensive (love his work personally ). I think many missed his satire / sarcasm
Then again I might just be talking nonce sense
It's not true but it is a 100% scientific fact .
