Calling Van Owners - CAZ - Clean Air Zones

Hiya

I currently have a euro 5 engine. Which appears to fall below the standards imposed for the Greater Manchester clean air zone.

This will effect me travelling North and East. The further proposed air zones will effect me to the tune of £380 a month if they go ahead, but those details are tbc including any discounts to local residents.

So for now, my euro 5 is OK, May '22 is when it starts.

I'm aware if you live in the sticks, you're OK, but I sadly for now don't have that luxury.

Is anyone else in the predicament of looking into switching out their older engine van for a euro 6? I've no idea if it's going to affect anything else other than vans I'm sorry.

Yeah, it's a weird one.
My flat in Edinburgh is just inside the proposed Clean Air Zone.
Seems that my campervan (a 1991 Leyland Daf 200 that spurts black smoke out the exhaust) and my Ducati (again, poor emissions) are allowed in, but the C4 Picasso eco-diesel I just bought (a 2013) isn't.

Our ones also say that they come into effect in Spring 2022 but there is a 2 year grace period before enforcement.

And looking at the maps of the zone, there are a lot of tiny little streets that cross the boundary. Supposedly there are only going to be cameras on a few of the roads in too?

It's looking more likely I'll have to sell my van to be honest.

I'll be able to get a bigger one on the plus side with a euro 6 engine which will be OK... For a couple of years...

It's interesting that it won't apply to private cars which must account for a shiv load of emissions.

(Camper vans get a concession, but not a free pass)

Rather annoying, only just got my first van after pining after one for 10 years.

Is it the same as the old LEZ regs in that campervans (as per the v5) are exempt? Got round this with my old t4 when that first came out in London.

I’m in the process now of getting my current van changed, it’s much stricter than it used to be!

The other option I guess is an engine swap to Petrol/lpg conversion.

I used to live in London and still go back (all my family still there). My van is ULEZ compliant thankfully, otherwise it's a big chunk of cash each time you hit the zone. Our other car is petrol and also ULEZ compliant.

Sounds like a CAZ is a softer ULEZ

.to Petrol/lpg conversion
I don't get the cheap tax , even though it's on the log book as LPG , as it was first registered as petrol
No idea what the rules are for these zones as not near one but it may not be as simple as that
FWIW LPG is 60p a litre and pretty much same mpg as petrol. I get 330 miles for £20

Find it hard to believe that my euro 5 t5 is any dirtier than some of the older diesels on rd? U can stand behind mine and there is no smoke or smell! Possibly another way to fleece us of yet more tax? Or get folk to spend their money on newer vans maybe 😄 which ever way I won't be selling mine any day soon.

So annoying isn't it. My van is basically a Golf, but they don't have to pay.

Are you just going to pay each time you use a CAZ Mike?

There will be plenty for sale in the Manchester area.... provided you don't want to drive them there

It would appear that my NV200 is Euro 5 but my very inefficient 60 year old motorbike and Dee's inefficient 40 year old one are both exempt :-bd FFS.

Aye. Loads of euro 5. Could get a lovely transporter finally.... But then the charge would make it out of my reach again!

Classic motors are exempt too.

It doesn't get enforced until 2023 though mind.

Bit boring, but the first part explains a lot

To be honest Allen, I tend not to worry much about things like this and in this case, I simply view it as another good reason to avoid sh!t-hole cities :-bd

I guess Stuart, I don't want to go to the city. Ever. But sometimes I have to drive through them to get to lovely places.

Caz.... that's one I won't be paying. Like stu I just keep clear of the cities, seems abit ridiculous though considering the amount of sub standard we put into the air everywhere else! Guess it's just another bollox way of making more tax money.

Why bother trying?
Because it's ill-conceived, poorly thought out and another tax on those who can least afford it?

Absolutely. Enforcement aught to start now and it should encompass all vehicle types in all locations.

 I actually agree something needs to be done and you do need to start somewhere. It could be done much more fairly, Delivery company’s and commercial operators etc will obviously just pass on the cost to customer, Mr & Mrs Range Rover won’t have to pay but someone with an outdoor hobby and a van/camper will get hit in the pocket.

Then again Birmingham and Bath do now include all vehicles.

The zone for Manchester is huge though and difficult to avoid (although Motorways aren’t inc) stretching from the Derbyshire boarder in the east less than 5 miles away from Kinder scout, to Standish Wigan in the west, also taking in list of the country side above Bolton, Bury and Rochdale in the North.

I’ve got my old caddy up for sale, it’s 2011 so it’s not euro6 compliant
