Hi, now that I'm going to start getting out more, following my how fit am I post, I'm really keen to stop using spd's and try out flats. Having spoken to Johnclimber on Instagram he recommended Pembree pedals, but funds at the moment won't allow for that. So, if anyone has got any cheaper alternative recommendations let me know, budget a measly £30 ish. Cheers.

if you are a 11 or 12 i can sort you with a pair of oneil flat pedal shoes, and a set of nice big flat pedals too. £40 the pair.

Alas, I'm a paltry size 8. Cheers, though.

I've tried a few different types (including hideously expensive DMR Mag V12s with ti axles, around £170 at the time) and now use Nukeproof Neutrons (as recommended by Scotroutes) on all my mountain bikes including a 5 grand full sus bike. They're cheap, grippy, comfy, light and strong and provided you keep them greased last for ages as well. I've absolutely mullered them off rocks and they just keep coming back for more and being plastic the scratches and bashes don't show like they do on alloy pedals. Maintenance is really easy, just unscrew the end caps, pack the pedal and cap with grease, then screw the end cap back in forcing clean grease through the bearings. My full sus bike is pretty blingy but I don't feel any temptation to swap to anything else, they're that good.

+1 for the nukeproofs. I use them on the fatty in deep snow. They are shin rippers though....

Another vote for Nukeproof, shop around, I got some from Go Outdoors for £25.

I swap to flat pedals from time to time, always end up back on SPD's though.

- made from nylon so don’t scratch and are lightweight
- they are low profile so less pedal strikes
- they are cheap

One hitherto unmentioned benefit of plastics, is that in cold weather they don't act quite so much as heat sinks when compared to metal.
