In a few days time I'm going to ride the Great North Trail as far as Edinburgh ( I rode everything north of there last summer) and return to the start via this route. The first part to Melrose ( mile 68) is The Capital Trail.

The bit after traversing east/west along the Cheviot Hills ridge line where you turn south is over MOD property so you'll need to check that it's not being used. If it is then continue west and then south past Spithope Bothy but don't use the bridleway there as it's an overgrown nightmare.
