WTD: ancient MTB stuff

I’ve just picked up a very cheap and very knackered Specialized Hardrock from 1988.

Intention is to get it to a state where I can ride it and see how bad it is on the routes I ride compared to my Brother Big Bro given I used to ride very similar similar bikes when I was a kid and have loads of fun.

So if you have any old components from a similar era I’d be very interested!

Many thanks

That was my first MTB. Biopace, thumbies and a U Brake out back.

Bits on ebay for that era are not cheap anymore.

Ha! You did better than me. Mine was a Halfords Apollo Atomic GT which had a total rip off of the spesh livery. I saved up and got a Saracen Eiger in 1994 though.

One of the conversational rabbit warrens Reg and I wandered down the other night in the pub was caving and carbide head torches :-bd ...

...which led to carbide bicycle lamps for the skip bike  .

Looks ace. And it only takes a couple of minutes to switch it on  .

GT Pantera with them legendary comfy Kona steel looking forks (but the GT version). Was so nice to ride I swapped some of the bits to bring it up to date. Then thought I should uograde the bottom brwcket but it probably had been in there for over 10 or 20 years (1980s bike I think.. maybe 90s).

Rode so lovely but the BB did me. Just couldn't get it out and didn't know about heat application in them days. In the end sold the frame and put the picture of it as my ebay profile pic. What a bike...

NB. Maybe you should've grabbed a GZ Zasker. Lovely retro bikes

Fair point... Plus Zasker (retro ones) get copied alot. My first was definitely a Zasker but in XL. So sold it on and eventually found a replacement. That deifnielty was not a Zasker and it rode like crap...

Zasker (original) was super comfy and compliant too.

I might have some 8 speed shifters lying about if any good

If they are thumb shifters then very interested. Can you PM prices and spec please?

Classic Marzocchi Bomber Z1, they used to be attached to a Specialized Hardrock that I used to commute on in the Naughties. The original owner painted them red to match the frame and they do have a scratch on one of the stanchions, but I never had a problem with them. As far as I know they still work, but may benefit from a service. Yours in exchange for a meal for the Bear...

I’ve caved with carbide users. We made them go in front for obvious reasons.

Cheers Bobcat.

I actually joined retro bike after picking up the bike. I’ve yet to strip the frame but I’ll need a new drivetrain probably, seatpost and some klunker style bars.

I've been hanging about on RB for many years and seem to have accumulated quite a few vintage steeds  .

I've got a few odds and ends up for sale which you can find the link to in my RB signature strip (same user name.)
