Do you carry a spare mech hanger when bikepacking?

I am always going on about carrying a spare mech hanger.
A friend was bikepacking with another group of friends and someone broke a hanger; she didn’t have a space.

Got me wondering what bears do.

I bought one for the Spearfish when I got the frame, it's a 2012 and didn't want for the hanger to be obsolete when (if) I needed one. As it's small and light (and very expensive) I have it with the spares I carry, no use if it's at home.

Obviously don't take one when I'm on the other bike

A few weeks back, we were heading up the Dee after white Bridge in the Cairngorms, a few miles from the Corrour bothy when my mate ripped his rear mech off the hanger.

Fortunately he had a spare mech hanger. Unfortunately, his mech was also pretty trashed

The same mate had previously smashed a mech hanger on the WHW so he had form.

yes all my bikes have a sparemech hanger and and following advice from on here its attached to the bike [ generally using a water cage bolt]

That said every time I have trashed one the mech broke as well probaby first then took the hanger with it

I have one of these universal ones from Joe's shop in my toolkit for emergencies: https://www.weirdosonbikes.com/product/ ... ch-hanger/

Reminds me I need to try it and see if it works on each of my bikes, just in case - better to find out in advance.

Usually depends where and for how long I'm going. However, as most of by bikes are steel with an integral hanger, it's less of a concern.

Always. They weigh f'all and definitely worth it if it saves a ride.

Yep. My most regular bikepacking bikes are Titanium.

Yes, just as I do when not bikepacking

Not particularly universal if it only works with qr skewer type frames and not thru-axle.

They also move about a lot and you’re not supposed to change gear whilst using it.
That said they can SS your bike and help get you out of the worst of trouble.

I would carry a spare hanger if I needed one but I’m in the steel frame camp. Also a Rohloff user so don’t even need a hanger.

Used to carry one bikepacking but specced my current bike frame to do away with this need.

The hanger is titanium so it’s unlikely to let go.

The frame also has a sliding rear drop out in the event the rear mech calls time at the bar.

For freehub failure I’ve got a 6 bolt cog I can fit in place of the rear disc to run fixed in an emergency.

No, because I don’t own one.

Fair point. "Universal" parts rarely are though. Three of my four bikes are QR rear, but I keep meaning to check if it works with them all and how well. You've reminded me to get a spare hanger for the other one though.

they work OK IME

Generally end up with the mech in a different place so either need to mess with adjusters or avoid some gears

That's what barrel adjusters are for. And inline adjusters on drop barred bikes FTW.

Both times I've needed one, the rear derailleur wasn't salvageable and had to come off. Luckily I was only 15km or so from home both times and could single speed it. Took me nearly two months to find a replacement when it happened at the start of March. I really should try and find another, as I would carry one if I had one...
