Was in Tiso today looking at the freeze dried meals. My god they are some price! one of the new range was a tenner a meal
Does anyone make their own? what do you use. there must be a suitable bag available that can take the boiling water and then just add rice, noodles etc. just looking for ideas or cheaper alternative makes

Robbie I asked the Q of cheap dehydrated meals a bit ago. Conclusion for me was Summit to Eat from Basecamp foods in Derbyshire and the Malaysian chicken flavoured instant noodles from Asda. The StE is about £4.50 if you choose carefully...

If you want to go down the DIY route, I've used "Soup and Store" bags from Lakeland successfully. They're not cheap for glorified plastic bags but they work well for the task you specified and making up your own meals is a lot cheaper than buying ready made ones.

Kind of a weird shop for me, I’ll occasionally stop for a mooch around the Perth store but never actually seem to find anything I want. It’s always ‘not quite what I’m after’ even though there should be loads of stuff in there.

Its often more hassle than its worth but can also be very satisfying
ie 2 weeks self supported i would do it 2-3 days going to get stuff from shops

- price wise going to work out less than £1 per meal but never fully costed

I've used 'Tip n Zip' freezer bags from home bargains to eat from.

They're self standing and you can pour hot liquids in to them for cooling or reheat food in them in the microwave. I also made a insulated foil pouch for keeping the food hot during rehydration.

As for food. I eat the pasta or cous cous mugshots from the supermarkets 50p -£1 a pack. I think the best Calorie to weight ratio for a packet is 280cal for 60grams (give or take) and that's a similar ratio to most brands of the more expensive stuff. I've sometimes chucked a similar flavoured cupasoup into the mix to add more calories. If your concerned about nutritional value, there are websites that sell dehydrated vegetables that you could also chuck in.

Breakfast is usually supermarket bought fruit and nut muesli with a teaspoon or two of hot chocolate powder and maybe an extra bit of nut/seed mix.

I remember my brother in law telling me a story of how he bought 3 prepacked breakfast meals for over £15 from a shop in Aviemore and only when he opened the packet did he realise it was just granola in rather expensive packaging

Cous Cous +med veg is less than £1.50 AT Lidl, probably 89p.
Ainsley Harriet Cous Cous meal from most super markets.
Breakfast just a, bag of quick oats 3oz + dried milk, make up bags at home.
I used Cous Cous & small tins of fish or sliced meat, simmer in mug +water ( bag+ hot water). At least you have something to chew.
A tip from mrt mate, Also a bubble wrap jiffy bag (ideally plastic both sides) will keep pouch meals hot whilst standing..& saves on fuel. .. Else a pot cosy. .
Lunch I took small wraps & cheese/ sliced meats/peanutbutter som'at moist. (OK for first few day if its cool. ). Wraps stay together unlike bread or oat cakes. Flapjack in a wrap mmm (OR is that just me)
Warm custard+dried milk / angel delight & cake, if you want a treat....

I am a new convert to wraps rather than bread rolls, they fit in the side pocket of my framebag as they are flat. My current favourite is Nutella and raspberries, very refreshing (if they don't get squashed to bits)

I've written up my pre-prepped Adventure Porage before, but here it is again.

Porage oats - 60g / 226 kcal
Nuts - 20g / 131 kcal
Dried fruit - 40g / 120 kcal
Milk powder - 15g / 50 kcal

Totals 135g / 527 kcal


I whizz it in a food processor to break down the oats, making it quicker to rehydrate.

Put in a Pour'n'store bag (or whatever the local equivalent is).

Boil water, pour in bag, mix, stand in a foil pouch for 10 mins or so), eat.

There's obviously scope for more/other flavourings. For instance some weirdos might try cinnamon.

The bags can be reused a few times.

Ready-brek reminds me of wallpaper paste. I've never been able to eat it.

Your mistake there is putting milk in your tea.

Nido is the best milk powder. It's full fat milk, look in the Asian aisle at the supermarket

I read you can store dehydrated milk in an air tight bag/container and keep it in the freezer to make it keep longer. Then you can just take out what you need.

I've had the same tub of Nido for years, still use it

Tastes fine and I'm still alive. I have a pretty relaxed attitude to sell by dates though
