Can anybody recommend a pair of MTB shoes that have the appearance of trail running shoes, that aren't hideous colours and will take cleats?

Blimey, she went for those you recommended.

Can’t really go wrong with the shimano stuff, the entry and mid range ones are reliable and comfy. Hope she gets on well with them

Quick update, after using the same shoes for the last 16 years, she wore the ones you recommended today and whilst she wasn't bowled over with disco slippers she said "they're alright" which is bloody good if anybody knows my wife.
She even put them on Strava.
