@JohnClimber I recognise those lauf forks - chatted with you briefly on the short climb just after the start I think.

The one of the Grot by the waterfall at Rydal Hall reminds me of an old mate from Ambleside, he'd sit in there with a fine cigar and contemplate the world like some reclusive old japanese zen monk.

They are old slate quarries/mines (not really mines, more a quarry that they left the roof on). There's lots in the area between Coniston, Tilberthwaite, Elterwater and Rydal. The one with the stepping stones coming out of it is here - http://streetmap.co.uk/map?X=335459&Y=505826&A=Y&Z=115 the other one is called Cathedral Quarry and is here http://streetmap.co.uk/map?X=331411&Y=502878&A=Y&Z=115 which is a mixture of a big hole in the ground and a big tunnel leading to it.
