Stu - Open in new window - pleeeeease...

Post by Borderer »

Hey Stu, any chance you could go into the settings for the forum and change it so that a new window is opened whenever a link is clicked? Pretty much every other website in the world operates this way and I would love it if this one would too.

You can open in a new window through your existing browser, that's how I usually view most forums

Don't you just press and hold on the link then a menu offers 'open in new tab' or 'open in new window'? Works on this box of tricks in my hand anyroad. Presumably a right click does same on desk/laptop?

right click link and open in a new tab and personally i prefer being able to choose what it does rather than have the site decide for me

Just hold down the CTRL key when clicking a link, that should open it in another tab. This has only become a real issue lately, as Facebook owned services seem to be over writing tab history and thus removing any ability to go back to the forum after looking at a photo, for example. Easiest solution there is for everyone to stop using Facebook owned products...

P.S. I'd rather a DARK MODE theme, pretty please...

It shouldn't open a new window unless the user specifies that.

Oh - Dark Mode. Please. Please. Please.

Dark mode should be an option. There are lots of optional themes for phpBB Forums (this one is called Flat Style). it just needs for one to be installed and then the user selects it as part of their preferences.

The entire place is in the early throws of a refit - will we get dark mode? We'll see.

W3C Standards are here..

https://www.w3.org/

Who are W3C??
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards. Led by Web inventor and Director Tim Berners-Lee and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe, W3C's mission is to lead the Web to its full potential. Contact W3C for more information.
https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/G200.html
The objective of this technique is to limit the use of links or buttons that open new windows or tabs within Web content. In general, it is better not to open new windows and tabs since they can be disorienting for people, especially people who have difficulty perceiving visual content. However there are some situations where it is preferable from an accessibility perspective to open a new window or tab. Here are two such situations:

Opening a page containing context-sensitive information, such as help instructions, or an alternate means of completing a form, such as a calendar-based date picker, will significantly disrupt a multi-step workflow, such as filling in and submitting a form, if the page is opened in the same window or tab.

The user is logged into a secured area of a site, and following a link to a page outside of the secured area would terminate the user's logon. In this case opening external links in an external window allows the user to access such references while keeping their login active in the original window.

It is recommended that when links are opened to a new window, there is advance warning.

Not sure that's correct. Recommended action is for a link to open in the same window/tab.

Edit: just checked a few tabs I have open (BBC, STW and others), all internal and external links open in the same tab /Edit

I moderate another forum that uses the same software as this and I can't see an option to set links to open in a new window/tab. In fact there isn't. A quick search gives:
Compared to phpBB3, links in phpBB2 had a slightly different behaviour: When you clicked them, they opened a new window with the requested page. This was changed in phpBB3 for a couple of reasons, but one of the most important ones was the goal to achieve XHTML 1.0 Strict-validation for the whole board.

I suppose that settles that then.

It used to be an option in Chrome and Firefox but that was removed several versions back (in 2019 in the case of Chrome). Presumably part of Google's drive to get sites to be compliant with the standards. Just checked with those and the default, recommended, behaviour for all links is to open in the same window/tab.

Any progress?

I've temporarily(?) set a Chrome Flag to force Dark Mode but it does have some wierd side-effects on some sites.
