28 inch tyre question.

Hi, a while ago I bought a 28inch ice spike tyre by accident, thinking it was 26in. Things have since moved on and we now have bikes in the house with 27.5 and 29in wheels.

To save me having to take the tyres off and try it - does anyone know if this tyre will fit either of our bikes?

It should fit the 29" (622mm rim) wheel but this could be dependent on the rim width. It'll be too big for 27.5".

No not heard of 28" either
Look for the erto no. On the side wall, this the circumference of the bead seat. Schwalbe have a guide advising type width vs rim width. Hope that helps.

I think they'll be fine on the 29er - seems to be commonly designated this way with tyres/tubes from Schwalbe. My Amazon is currently shod in some Marathon Winter tyres marked as 28x35c on a set of DT Swiss rimmed 29er wheels (21mm internal I think).

28” = 29er = 700c

They all fit 622mm rims. The designation comes from the nominal diameter of the tyre when fitted and inflated.

Popular in countries like Germany 28” is an older designation for (mostly) touring and town bike tyres. Interestingly (or more likely not!) a narrow 28” tyre eg. 23mm is more like 26” diameter but a fatter tyre eg. 40mm is more true to 28”.
When 622mm rims were introduced to MTB’s the fatter tyres were coming in closer to 29” hence being labelled 29er. The high volume tyres of today are more like 30”
To know for sure if a tyre will fit a rim look for the ettro sizing printed on the tyre in this case 622.

Ok thanks everyone.
The rims say Alex rims Volar 2.3 and the tyre says 42-622 28x1.6 so I think that means it won't fit.

The 622 bit of your 42-622 marking is the bead seat diameter. As mentioned upthread, this size is variously referred to as 28"/29er/700c, largely based on the tyre width.

Your tyre will fit a 29er wheel, probably best if the rim has an internal width of approx 17-25mm. As the Volar is listed as having 23mm internal width, it looks like you're golden.

No.. that makes perfect sense. They'll fit just right as you're using the narower tires which would have a diamter of less than the 29" when attached to same rims

[Edit: sorry, others already said the same... should've read it first.... so, what they said :-bd ].

The nearest I can come to answering this (well, before I read the other answers, at least) is that I have some 28 inch tubes in my 29er tyres.
Have no idea where they came from, though
