Getting a cold spot on my hip with my Sea to Summit ultralight insulated comfort mat using my Cumulus 350 quilt at this time of year. Whats a good ultralight non bulky remedy. Closed cell foam mat, sleeping bag liner ? Please no suggestions about a new mat or new sleeping bag unless your willing to testify to my girlfriend that you made me buy them

A small section of closed cell foam placed under the sleep mat at the appropriate point should help. It can do double duty as a sit pad too.

I had that same trouble with the same mat last week. I had a reflective sheet under the mat which really should have solved the problem, but it didn't help. In the end I put an extra layer (a padded gilet) between my hip and the mat and that worked.

If it's just a reflective sheet, then it'll make no difference at all because they have no insulation properties. CCF, bubblewrap or even reflective bubblewrap will work

From what I can tell Bridget, that has little or no insulation value. You lose very little heat to the ground via radiation.

As we're on the topic and not waiting to hijack the thread, quick question....

I was tempted to bag my first 'snow camp' the other night but jibbed out. If in a tent or under a tarp, what do you suggest going under the mat which would reduce the cold coming through?
My mat is an Exped Lite 5M which hasn't given me any issues previously. Thanks

Some laminate floor ccf underlay will work Jeff but a mat with an R value (old standard) of 4 or more should be okay on snow.

I use a CCF sit mat regularly, would work well for an extra bit of hip insulation

I used my thermarest neoair with a CCF mat on snow. Have since upgraded to an xtherm and would happily use that directly on snow
