Rescue my synthetic down gilet
I know the answer is that it is kaput but a synthetic down gilet I like has ended up in the tumble dryer. The down has balled up in each compartment so it is now useless. It will take a million years to massage each one out. Any other ideas?

Bit odd that a synthetic item should do that Dave ... or was the dryer really hot?

In that case, I'd suspect that whatever insulation is still in there is now bolloxed. Kind of sounds like it's partially melted.

I agree with him inspect - ie cut /pick your way in and have a look at some to see if this is the case
I wash loads of my sysnethitc stiff and washing certainly does not do this
the Decathalon ones are cheap if you need a replacement

Take it to one of those massage places and ask for a happy ending...?Dave Barter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 1:09 pm It will take a million years to massage each one out. Any other ideas?
Sorry, can't offer any serious advice What make / model was it? (sorry for use of past tense).
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

Just try washing again, tumble dry it again on low with a couple of tennis balls.

Yep what L'Homme de Fromage says. I managed to rescue my sons's synth gilet after giving it a proper gasping in the drier. It was an old Decathlon one and Ive no idea what the insulation was, but it all balled up. A very, very long wash followed by a very, very long cool dry with a couple of those lumpy drier balls and it was fine.

Tennis balls idea is a cracker! I’m going to give it a go subject to Helen’s approval

Do it when she's out, when I've done it in the past it sounds like someone playing tennis inside the dryer and even though I knew it wouldn't damage the drum Jane took some convincing.Dave Barter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 4:47 pm Tennis balls idea is a cracker! My downwash kit comes with spikey plastic balls to put in the dryer, they appear to be identical to the dog toys.

If you haven't any tennis balls why not try shutting Helen in the drier with it until she admits it was her fault and buys you a new one. Your initial post was fairly nuanced but you're not fooling me

Because I melted one of her bras in there a while back. I’m not squeaky clean enoughpistonbroke wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 5:11 pm If you haven't any tennis balls why not try shutting Helen in the drier with it until she admits it was her fault and buys you a new one. Tennis balls won't work with synthetic, sorry Dave. Thats specific to down. I could be wrong but pretty sure (like 99.9236979% that I'm not). Sorry to say it, but you've knackered it. Use it as an apportunity to get a new favourite synthetic down gilet. I'll donate a few quidDave Barter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 4:47 pm Tennis balls idea is a cracker! Please don't swear at me Dave (you're still welcome to borrow Stan-the Sonder whenever you feel) but I'll get the ball rolling for you... Please don't mess this new one up

What have you got as a drier? A bloomin' blast furnace?Dave Barter wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 5:30 pm

Actually most UK domestic dryers are too hot, the dryers at laundromats can be set at lower temps.

Re: Rescue my synthetic down gilet
Closer inspection shows this is actually down not synthetic which surprises me as it is Hi-Gear that I bought from Go Outdoors for £20 off the sale rail. Let’s give the tennis balls a whirl before Shaf tempts me off into spend land.

You can use the scorched 'brazier' as a tennis ball hammock. Free storage. Win - win!

Back in student days (rented) we used to throw an old pair of shoes in with our down jackets to beat them puffy again. Noisy as you'd imagine.

I think Dave is an alchemist trying to turn synthetic into down.
