What's like a small carabiner but not...

I'm after a small carabiner type thing but can't find exactly what I'm after.

It's for 25mm webbing (on my pack raft) to fasten two loops together but to be able to remove them from each other.

I want to comment 25mm webbing two loops together with a thing similar to a carabiner like these shots below





But of course a carabiner is not designed for this loading and will snap and it needs to be a clip as hooks will un-hook

So please can you tell me and drop me a link to what I'm after instead please?

I got some of these to use as keyrings from PX when I was ordering something else. I used to used a mini spring gated karabiner but it was bulky and the gate would slip open in my pocket. These are screwgates. Should take a fair bit of load. https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CPJOBTC/j ... -karabiner

Oval screw gate karabiner or a maillon rapide would be my recommendation. The oval karabiner, with the webbing in each of the rounded ends will ensure that the strain is pulling across the gate as per a typical climbing load.

The maillon rapide is more permanent, whereas the screw gate is designed to be opened and closed much more often.

They both look like toys the sea to summit buckles are quality if the load rating is sufficient, I’ve a set in a revelate bag (I broke the original by slamming a car door on it) they are burly. If you need something serious find a webbing beener

John, those plastic carabiners you linked to are a copy of the maxpedition grimloc. I have a few, they're strong and are very light load bearing. Not for climbing etc etc

Don't know what loads they're taking so might work well. Known quite well in the bushcraft and tacticool community

Maillons are much stronger but they're a lot more faff to open and close quickly. D or U shackles might be easier

I was also going to suggest an oval karabiner or maillon rapide like lots of other people Bear in mind with the latter you can get various shapes (D, oval, triangular etc) and sizes (so overall weight and thickness of bar-stock). There's usually something to fit the bill providing you're happy with the slight fag of the screw-opening and smaller "gate" size than a krab. If it were something to be frequently opened/closed I'd go krab.

I use some of those metal buckles on my camera bag to attach a tripod/3 way head(4kg) and as long as they’re under tension the don’t unhook or slip. There’s a wee lip to stop them coming undone. Even once you’ve slackened them off you have to actually remove them.

As Alastair says, climbing carabiners are designed to have the main load close to and parallel to the spine (the part opposite the gate). An oval carabiner would do the job but they aren't that easy to get in the UK as they were always more popular in the States for their big aid climbs.

A maillon rapide gets round the load direction issue but the screw closure might be a different problem and could be awkward with cold wet fingers.

Another option might be a soft shackle, basically a carabiner made from amsteel cord. If you want I can make you a couple and send them to you.

What about a Dyneema soft shackle Karabiner of the kind that DD Hammocks sell? good for loading of 125 kg. Or you could make your own if you've got the Dyneema.
