Possibly a catastrophe. Advice needed please.
Sorry to put a downer on cheery Friday.
On the way home from a ride today the mech hanger on Joe's bike snapped. While this is not a major biggie in itself, it looks as though a small part has sheared off the wheel dropout also. As this is a carbon fibre bike, I am seriously concerned that this is curtains for the frame.
It was a dirt-cheap chinese no-name frame bought second hand on Ebay so I don't even know where to start to source a new hanger either.
What do you all think? Is there still enough of the wheel dropout there? The wheel partially jumped out of the frame so I think that was what caused the frame damage. The QR lever was done up and it seemed like the tension was fine. So I don't think it came out because it wasn't done up enough. He was just riding a smooth road surface and wasn't even standing up on the pedals.

Looks like a fairly generic hanger.
Have a look at this site and you might spot it.

I'd certainly try fitting a replacement.

Thanks. Do you think the frame is ok then?

I have seen a chart of mech hangers somewhere and hopefully someone will be able to point you at it.
I would find another hanger from a known source and replace the broken one to see how well it goes back together. Once the everything is bolted back in with the wheel in position my hope is that it would provide sufficient stiffness to work.
Good luck.

Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

Thank you. It looks like Boardman and Giant have similar hangers. I will try LBS guy tomorrow to see if he has any kicking around. If not I will have to go to the Big City.

(I am not a qualified engineer, but...)
There's nothing there that would worry me about the frame. The mech hanger snapping will have been where most of the force will have gone. If there is any damage to the frame (IMO unlikely), it's not in a place that would fill me with horror (as opposed to e.g. a stem or fork failing).

Thanks. I am planning a biggish trip to Inhospitable Lands so was worried that it would just happen again somewhere more inconvenient if the wheel wouldn't stay secure.

If the frame didn't suffer any major impact, then it's just a cheap shoddy hanger. Get a new one and all will be well.

You can send a photo of the hanger to BETD (I guess even a damaged one) and they’ll send you the right replacement.

I’ve used them recently... a few days delivery time.

With regard the frame, hate to say it but I’d not feel super confident riding a frame that bits of carbon fall off. That shouldn’t happen really.
Doesn’t mean it’s for the bin but it may indicate the care in its manufacture.
When you get a hanger, make sure there’s still the same face contact left for the hub ends as a minimum check. Have a look see if there’s any cabin flaking or delamination etc too

Could also try GearmechHanger.com (hope he's still open). Used to have every hanger for every bike i think (almost) for not too much money
Re: Possibly a catastrophe. Advice needed please.
A bit difficult to determine from a photo, but my initial thoughts are the frame is ok and the hanger has done it’s job.
Have a poke around the frame around the dropout, look for any obvious cracking. Try and move it around by hand, should feel nice and solid - flex along the length of the seat stays/chain stays, but no ‘give’.
Hopefully you find the right hanger. Check it sits properly in the frame before fitting it. A small blob of Loctite 242 on the screw threads and nip them tight - not too much as they’re only small and Allen key will slip.
The hub axle should sit nicely into and contact the inside U of the hanger.
Tighten the QR up an d should be good to go again.

Hopefully you’ll track down the right one, my only advice then would be to buy two hangers so you can carry a spare.

Thanks guys. I think I have found the right hanger on two of the sites you all linked for me. Neither place is open at the weekend so I will just have to wait and see til Monday. Cheers
