While out on the bike last week, I picked up three rear wheel punctures and this cut to my front tyre:
Even with two patches on the inside, the inner tube is still causing a bulge. So I thought I might attempt to repair it with a needle and thread. Mainly to get some experience, as in the past, I'd have just chucked it. It was only on the bike for just over a week and a half, so still has load of life left.
So what kind of needle and thread do you need to repair a cut tyre...?
I have a needle and thread that I've never used in my FAK. It's a more robust needle than standard sewing ones that someone recommended to me ages ago but I have no idea which one
Make a couple of plastic patches from milk bottles or toothpaste tubes, that will help stop the tube from poking through
I wouldn't bother with a curved needle. I'd use a leather needle and waxed nylon thread, again often used for leather. A curved needle will be an advantage if trying to sew it up without removing the tyre but removing the tyre will make life easier either way.
Just a suggestion,I have had splits in tyres , (particularly lightweight road tyres) next time ,use a folded £5 or £10 note in an emergency on the inside between the tyre and tube. Have covered over 100 miles on a Sunday night once riding back from an event!
