Everyone else - I fitted a bottle cage extender to the downtube of my Burls Ti. I stupidly used the old bolt to attach the cage and did not think about it's length. It has pressed into the frame when I tightened it. See photo below. Hopefully nothing to worry about as basically a minor dink. But if I am going to die I need to tell Helen.

Not super tight, didn't really notice any extra resistance as I would have stopped but using a long allen key clearly gave some decent leverage. Was gutted but not a lot I can do now. Simply picked up the wrong bolt.

Can't see it being a issue Dave ,as long as there's no crack around the indentation ,you'll be grand lf your worried find a welder( not someone who "sticks" metal together) and have it filled in .this may be a bit ott mind

That frame's written off, it's an accident looking for somewhere to happen. It will need to be correctly disposed of to make sure it doesn't get re-used with the subsequent liability for any harm caused going back to you. Disposal isn't cheap but worth it for the peace of mind.

If you send the frame to me and £200 cash I'll make sure it's all taken care of and send you a certificate of disposal*, just PM me for the address details.

*written in crayon on a bit of old wiggle delivery box

I'd be more worried about the big hole in your downtube right next to it.

Fit a bottle cage quickly (with short bolts) and forget all about it.

The stress continues as it turns out my headset is fuxinated as well so emergency trip to bike shop in progress. The last time this bike got ridden was BB300 2018 so I blame Stu or Wales or both.

You will forget about it with time , I dropped a metal pole on my carbon full suspension bike when it was 3 days old and too a big lump of paint off the top tube , I almost cried.
In other news I got my new bike, pictures to follow when I work out he to do it !

All my bikes show chipped paint, the steel ones have dents, the carbon ones.. well see for yourself


I check for soft spots every now and then and as long as I can't find any, I'm not bothered.
And I think I have enough reasons to bother about a functioning bike as it gets ridden a lot in such places:

Dave, if I were you, I'd check for hair cracks at least when giving the bike a good clean. Ti is rather ductile, I see no reason to worry.
I've had dents in the down tube on aluminium DH bikes of similar size but much deeper - nothing happened there and al isn't as ductile as ti.

The marks straps make from bikepacking bags leave may cause some to wrap every thing in tape, other just ride on.

FWIW I clunked my Jones against a workstand ..well, knocked over a folded stand... and put a small ding in the (steel) TT. Gutted, for an hour or 2. Now has a padded TT so I can lean it against walls and not bother about it happening again. The recovery method is cover it up and forget, it'll be fine. Bikes need some sort of wear or damage to be right.

I often give my bikes a damn good thrashing with twigs or baler twine, keeps them in line and eager to obey my every command. Always good to go full Basil Fawlty on their asses.

Btw does anyone have suggested uses for 2 cracked Van Nic Ti frames? Thinking of turning them into wind chimes as they're useless as bikes.

Van Nic have a lifetime (25 year) warranty.

I know, frame 2 is a replacement for the original, trouble is they don't make the model I've got any more so I'm looking at considerable cost for components that will fit the 2nd replacement as well as shipping the cracked frame back to them. It's built with a Rohloff hub so I'm looking at gear cables,torque arm, EBB, Forks (tapered rather than straight steerer) new frame bag. Thankfully they haven't changed the hub spacing otherwise I'd be royally pissed off.

Maybe get it drilled out and a new bottle cage mount popped there to save using the extended mount - the offset position for the new mount has been well marked already
