caliper bolt

Discovered halfway round Today's Ride that my rear caliper bolt had fallen out and one pad gone - bit disconcerting. Sabotage by squirrel or something. Get home, check on tinternet - hens teeth Formula T1 bolts. Only one place in Italy - £25!! World's most expensive bike bolt? Rummage in shed, M3 (10p's worth), that'll do. Not sure what the insurance company'll think. Probably more than they would with a cabletie which was the other permanent option  . 2500% saving or whatever it is - bargain.

The Formula ones are made of cheese anyway Reg!
A tie-wrap will do the job, or even though a Hope one is a different thread size, as long as it's not over-tightened, it'll also do..

Is it the bolt that goes through the caliper and holds the pads in you need?

I use genuine Hope pads and the bolt comes with them so I have built a collection of spares  If you want to try them PM me an address and I'll send you you some to try.

A split pin will also do - Shimano use them on some of their brakes. Nip down to your local hardware store and grab a few.

As Sean says, Hope ship a bolt (and that funny locking pin thing) with their replacement pads and it's not something that is under strain and wears out so they are usually just spares lying around in the parts bin.

anything you put through and then bend so it cannot come out will secure the brake pads- i once used a sewing needle* and then just bent both ends upwards - worked fine- I forgot i did it and it stayed in for months
I would just use a split pin if it was £25 but not familiar with those brakes.
*it was the middle of nowhere** i was not sat at home thinking what will work

** yes yes i did lose it changing the pads

Reg - it's worth getting a spare set of Hope pads then keep the bolt "just in case". I've a small tin* with various spare bolts and similar small spare parts, valve core, etc. and the Hope pin is one of those.

*actually one for each bike as each has some specific bolts and it means I've always got the right one.
