What suss fork for a Ramin 3+

Hi all,

Just thinking ahead to winter, I rode the Ramin 3+ through last winter which was great but with some of the rockier stuff I ride up here in the Western Lakes I definitely felt I could do with a suss fork to pair with the 3” tyre on the front.

Any ideas what would be suitable, not looking for anything too pricey as it’s just for the winter? Its non-boost and I think it’s a straight steerer. Any ideas appreciated.

Anyone have anything sitting in a shed that they might be looking to part with?

Cheers, Andy

Non-boost, 3" clearance and straight steerer will be a rare combo. Might be worth investigating a boost conversion kit and a new bottom half of your headset.

Thanks Johnny, I thought that might be the best route. Any idea how to find a suitable conversion kit to the standard hubs?

Do they all do the same job? I presume they extend the hub and move the disc mount too?

Assuming you're running 650b then you should be fine in a non-boost Fox 32 or 34. I've run 3" 29er Dirt Wizards in them and they're fine for width.

The bike will take a tapered fork also, just fit an EX44 / external cup for taper steerer and 44mm ID head tube.

Cheers both, that's great. I'll start scouring the web for a bargain.

Fox Rhythm 34. Round about 300 quid and a really good fork for the price.

Better damping than many 600 quid forks and from the experience I have with various brands, Fox have by far been the most carefree.

I swapped the bottom cup and fitted a tapered steerer fork to my Ramin 1 no problem (assuming the head tubes are the same, mine doesn't have the EBB). You'll be amazed by the weight of the OEM fork (not dissing the rigid fork, just saying that steel whilst being good for springiness isn't the lightest) so adding suspension won't up the weight too much.

Thanks for the info all, after some trawling, I've found a suitable Fox fork, which I think will be suitable for what I want and is cheap enough to not worry about if it doesn't work out. Just need to confirm 160mm is enough steerer and I'll have a go!

Cheers all

I've stuck a RS Recon 100mm on mine before. It won't fit a 3" tyre but it worked OK with a fatter 29er wheel. I've changed my lower cup so it'll take a tapered steerer.

Mines a large and needs a 190mm+ steerer.

Alas, 160mm not long enough, needs around 180mm.

Following the "Do I want a..." thread, I'm sort of tempted by a fatbike now... Calibre Dune looks like a decent shout for cheap thrills and with all the beach and moorland riding I can get to, may make more sense as I can still use the full bouncer for proper trail riding.

Thanks for the advice all and I'll keep an eye out for cheap forks still just in case.

 Textbook.

When "I'm going to get a new fork" becomes "I'm going to get a new bike" in less than one page. :-bd

Get it done!!

Check you can't also get a further discount at Go Outdoors; services, NHS, Police, Scouts etc etc etc You'll quite often manage a further 10% discount, bringing it down to less than £500.

Yes... ok... Just the one more

On the subject. My little one with his IslaBike asked me and the missus the other day, "I need another bike"... We explained that one bike should be enough... He said "but Abba (dad) has more than 1". Missus looked at me so I explained to little man "but thats cos abba has a road bike to get to work and an mtb to ride with you"... He said "not, but you got 3 bikes" (then went on to explain the rolling chossis with plenty bits on it hung in shed to eventually be my climbing road bike [aiming at sub 6.3kg hence a very slow build])...

Anyway... so yes. Andy, you deserve another bike since its a complex decision getting just forks for a Ramin. Just have a nice diplomatic answr for the kids and missus and not just the N+ rule...

But how can you expect the next generation to carry forward the honourable tradition of n+1 if you don’t nurture the instinct? 🙄

(Sorry, just for balance. I work in the bike industry and I'm not a fan of N+1 ideas, hence I struggle with life a little  )

Thanks team, I feel I’ve found that safe space we’re all looking for where we’re supported and don’t feel judged...

Fat bike it is... once my paddle board arrives first! Seems more suitable for summer!
