I'm genuinely sorry for starting a what tyre thread, but....

After being out of action for some years it's been a while since I have bought a new 29er tyre. I had been using an On One Smorgasbord for years as I had always felt it was a good tradeoff between wet and dry conditions and I was also able to get it to seal tubeless. Since I have started riding again I have been struggling to get the rear to seal. I can pump it up at the start of a ride and get home again but within a week I'm having to put more air back in. It might be the tyre or indeed could be the gorilla tape that I used to seal the rim just needs to be replaced. Guess I'll try that first.

I could just get another Smorgasbord but I was just wondering what people are using that roughly falls into the description above?

edit: Probably looking for 2.1 or 2.2 widths.

I've become a fan of the Bontrager XR series. XR2 might be a good option for your back tyre, though I always prefer something chunkier on the front.

Another fan of the Bonty XR series here. I did this weekend's JennRide in the Lakes with XR3 front/XR2 rear. They go up tubeless really easily as well.

Continental X KIngs here. They're not the cheapest and I can't get mine to go up tooobless but the tread pattern ..... ooooh, I do love them. They come up very big for a 2.4 and I can run them down to 14psi or so, which is not much but gives super grip in winter, and then stuff them up to 25-30psi for the drier months and they roll amazingly well. Proper versatile, long lasting tyre, I reckon.

I've just put an Ardent race 2.2 on the back of mine. All the acronyms on there for £30 on CRC. Quite like it so far. Not sure how it would fair in mud though

Where you ride (most) though is key.

When I was Buckinghamshire-based I could run 500g (26") tyres and in summer looked at Crossmarks and the like (winter was Mud-X's), but once in the Borders the weights/strengths have increased exponentially.

Now on 1kg (29") tyres and run an e13/Minion heavily treaded tyre upfront all year and swap out the rear between a Minion DHF (winter) & Minion SS (summer).

Same here, xr1's currently for the dry gravelly stuff I'm riding currently, xr3s for a bit more gnarly. Tubeless setup is straightforward and the sidewalls are robust without being a lardy tyre.
