I think this has been covered before but i can't find it. As bikehike no longer has sattelite maps what apps/sites are people using to check if a path exists on the ground?

https://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

get in early as they have a limited amount of google data, which I guess it what killed the bikehike functionality.

My mate has this amazing app for the alps (he's in Geneva). It showed sat maps and the OS map equivalent with a slider so you can fade them in and out. I'd love to see that for the UK

If you are into old maps (often useful for tracks anyway) then the NLS website uses georeferencing to allow exactly that sort of overlay.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=1 ... yers=1&b=1

I often look on Geograph. If someone has bothered to take a picture, they'll generally try and include whatever's there of human interest, which usually includes tracks / paths.

+1 for Geograph. In Geograph you can set the underlying map/image which includes Bing maps. I'll also check things like Strava heat map, doesn't give any indication of rideability but if it's had a number of cyclists then that's a good indication (BB200 routes excepted of course!).

I use http://www.mapyx.com its not free, but buying the tiles sufficient to plan a ride in a new area doesn't cost a lot, no problem with too many users exceeding the daily limit, and integrates with google earth well so you can see your routes overlaid on satellite view.

Like most mapping software it is idiosyncratic and doesn't follow normal icon, menu etc conventions, but I find it fun to use to plan rides and walks and also to look at where I rode afterwards.

Could try http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/ or https://www.plotaroute.com, you can swap between views.

Planning a route and still really miss the sat maps on bikehike. Has anyone found a good planning tool that'll do this?

That's more for sat map views rather than being able to make a GPX using a sat map right?

It's nice to be able to check tracks actually exist on the ground on a sat map when plotting a route on OS maps. Bikehike had the two maps side by side which was very useful but google now charge to use their sat maps so the guy running bikehike had to give the sat maps up.
Of the other apps mentioned above I use viewranger now but you still have to pay for their maps in the first place.

Maverick gps navigation app for android (and free) has satellite image layer (called Microsoft hybrid). I've used it UK, Iceland, Greenland and Norway. Has lots of other layers too.

I’ve used Bing and toggled between is and Ariel.

I find that not having the gpx track is good as it makes me study the map far more. Obviously is slower and not so convenient

ViewRanger is excellent, I currently have the OS subscription and Spanish 1:25k. I can download these for offline use along with satellite views (although these do use a lot of memory)
