I believe you can set google maps to download a certain area for use when offline.

I'm not suggesting you use it for navigation but it might be useful if it all goes a bit wrong.

Aye, a good camera app. Think I have something called 650-Pro, it does all kinds of clever things and pretty much gives you full control.

Isn't there an app that allows you to point your phone at something like a road sign, menu, etc that you can't read and converts any text into English ... which we have a slightly better chance with.

Sorry Colin, I hadn't realised Google Translate did that - I thought you had to type in the word you'd like translating, like you do on a computer.

Google translate with relevant language pack downloaded - Self-explanatory
Google Keep - I use it for notes about the route or places along the route, saves carrying bits of paper

Aye, it's one of the cleverest pieces of software I've used. It's not perfect - restaurant vocabulary is sometimes a language of its own - but ingredients usually translate well. Instructions of any sort, map keys, contracts (hire car etc) work pretty well.

Aye, it's one of the cleverest pieces of software I've used. It's not perfect - restaurant vocabulary is sometimes a language of its own - but ingredients usually translate well. Instructions of any sort, map keys, contracts (hire car etc) work pretty well.

+1 for this; used it in rural Southern Spain (where there is not a lot of English spoken), earlier this year, mostly for menus, and it works like magic (so long as you have a wifi signal), but it did seem to drain the battery really quick!
