A few hours round the peak with mje this morning about 60 odd km and 1500m. There were no strong winds that were forecast and it didn't even rain until we were well on the way home!

What did it taste like?
We were amazed by the carnage caused..... the chicken was last seen in the hands of the farmer headed for his Aga.... and he was apologising profusely; we wrongly assumed he was worried about a liability claim (but how you'd make that stick I don't know!). Nice old boy.

The rider most injured had a bike shop http://www.vernonbarkercycles.co.uk/ in Dronfield I think? His was a nice old steel frame with some vintage Durace that will take some replacing

So, do you know why the chicken crossed the road?

It was in the middle when we found it but definitely made it to 'the other side'...

Nice work Mark, you've certainly earned some karma points there.

In today's ride, my freshly rebuilt forks I pulled apart last weekend and only test rode down the street worked well round coed y brenin. Beast and bull done in some of the wettest conditions I've experienced! Had my legs slightly torn off by my uni mates, but all good. Only do trail centres in the off centre, was actually fairly traffic free :+)

Very windy commute home from work today!

Took the dog out for a 6.5 mile loop from home, christened my rigid SS el mariachi, was lovely being out. Bigger ride planned for Thursday

A short ride out and about Haughmond Hill. Have been trying to stay off Lois and let some old injuries heal but the lure was just too great. Now to get the mud off my kit and my girl.

Knobbly tyres on the Fat Bike brought the fun back into my local riding today, hunting sand dunes to climb and descend rather than sticking to the beach.

Seeing as there was a dusting of snow 25 minutes away I thought I'd take the Salsa to her natural environment :)

Glen Einich?

We went for a ride up on Threshfield Moor, a bit of patchy snow and ice but it became increasingly muddy and slutchy as the day went on.

A very windy and energy sapping muddy 19 miles in The Chilterns. I think it's time to put the carbon geared full suss away for the winter and get the singlespeed out!

Thought I'd have a bit of a road / off road ride with the cross bike. Lots of muddy trails which were quite good fun, then thought I'd have a crack at a strava segment as the wind was behind me. Cue one pinch flat, so out came the spare tube. Second attempt at the segment end up with about a dozen thorns and two flat tyres. Luckily Helen was out of the shower when I phoned for a lift home, and she didn't seem to mind too much, but it did cost me a trip to the supermarket!

A mad days riding in the Lakes on Saturday. All the carnage that's been in the news, we were out round Grizedale & Claife Heights riding in it!

Driving over in the morn we knew it was going to be wet, but at this point the roads weren't flooded. So after a conflab we decided we'd do a short-ish ride over to the Christmas Fair at Hawkshead.

The signs were already there though...
Image

We set off & things weren't too bad..
Image

The trails were very wet & the first stream crossing was a bit tasty..
Image

Two of the girls decided to go round on the road & meet us at the bottom of the rd..

These are normally dry sections of trail.. There was a surprising amount of grip in the conditions though..
Image
Image

Due to a lost Garmin the group then had to split, two of us retraced our steps to find the Garmin, unfortunately now with a broken screen

Despite the weather it was pretty warm & as long as we didn't stop for too long we were having a great time..

Image
Image

The trails were gradually getting worse though & after stopping because one of the lads had a puncture we were starting to feel cold. Dropping down the back of Claife Heights towards Belle Grange we had to ride through an over axle deep section of trail over 100meters long. It was only because of the trees that you could actually see where the trail was! When approaching Hawkshead we had to go through another long section of this time flooded road that was pretty much as deep as our wheels. We'd been having a blast until this point & it began to sink in that things were bad..

Due to a faulty dropper post one of the girls had bailed at the beginning of the ride & so we'd arranged to meet her in Hawkshead for lunch. On finding her in the car park it really hit home how bad things were as whilst upset she filled us in about all the flooding in the area. Luckily she was in decent sized van so after a couple of runs we were all back at the car park, cold by this time but safe. There was some flooded roads but we luckily managed to find our way through the back lanes to the main road, although we unfortunately due to flooded roads couldn't make it to our booking for the night at Ambleside yha, so after a lot of faff we headed back to Wigan for a curry & a few beers..

I've ridden in wet conditions but nothing like that before, at the time it was surprisingly ace, but the seriousness of the conditions soon hit home on reaching Hawkshead. We could see people trying to keep water from getting into their homes & to see all the pictures on the internet & tv, it's all pretty heartbreaking really.. I was also in the Lakes during the floods in 2009 & this did seem worse. I'm sure the people of Cumbria have the strength to see it all through & help each other get back on their feet. I just hope it's a long time before any thing as bad as this happens again..
