A mad days riding in the Lakes on Saturday. All the carnage that's been in the news, we were out round Grizedale & Claife Heights riding in it!
Driving over in the morn we knew it was going to be wet, but at this point the roads weren't flooded. So after a conflab we decided we'd do a short-ish ride over to the Christmas Fair at Hawkshead.
The signs were already there though...
We set off & things weren't too bad..
The trails were very wet & the first stream crossing was a bit tasty..
Two of the girls decided to go round on the road & meet us at the bottom of the rd..
These are normally dry sections of trail.. There was a surprising amount of grip in the conditions though..
Due to a lost Garmin the group then had to split, two of us retraced our steps to find the Garmin, unfortunately now with a broken screen
Despite the weather it was pretty warm & as long as we didn't stop for too long we were having a great time..
The trails were gradually getting worse though & after stopping because one of the lads had a puncture we were starting to feel cold. Dropping down the back of Claife Heights towards Belle Grange we had to ride through an over axle deep section of trail over 100meters long. It was only because of the trees that you could actually see where the trail was! When approaching Hawkshead we had to go through another long section of this time flooded road that was pretty much as deep as our wheels. We'd been having a blast until this point & it began to sink in that things were bad..
Due to a faulty dropper post one of the girls had bailed at the beginning of the ride & so we'd arranged to meet her in Hawkshead for lunch. On finding her in the car park it really hit home how bad things were as whilst upset she filled us in about all the flooding in the area. Luckily she was in decent sized van so after a couple of runs we were all back at the car park, cold by this time but safe. There was some flooded roads but we luckily managed to find our way through the back lanes to the main road, although we unfortunately due to flooded roads couldn't make it to our booking for the night at Ambleside yha, so after a lot of faff we headed back to Wigan for a curry & a few beers..
I've ridden in wet conditions but nothing like that before, at the time it was surprisingly ace, but the seriousness of the conditions soon hit home on reaching Hawkshead. We could see people trying to keep water from getting into their homes & to see all the pictures on the internet & tv, it's all pretty heartbreaking really.. I was also in the Lakes during the floods in 2009 & this did seem worse. I'm sure the people of Cumbria have the strength to see it all through & help each other get back on their feet. I just hope it's a long time before any thing as bad as this happens again..
