When I came back to cycling and started riding regularly again I used safety glasses initially and then progressed to a mid priced pair of Decathlon glasses with three different lenses. They were both okay and did the job up to a point but they would steam up on climbs and be too dark under trees (unless I changed the lenses over mid ride) meaning I was constantly taking them on and off or sometimes not bothering to wear them. Eventually I splashed on a pair of Oakley Jawbreakers with photochromatic lens which were reduced on Wiggle (but still over £100) and honestly they are so much better that I wondered why I'd bothered with cheaper specs. The lens clarity is exceptional, they change tint according to brightness (they're clear enough for night riding), comfortable, don't move at all on your face, provide a lot of protection due to their size and they very rarely steam up (only when walking and working hard on humid days) and when they do steam up they clear in seconds when you start riding again. Being able to see where you're going is a pretty fundamental requirement when cycling so I think it's worth spending a bit of money in that department if it ensures excellence and safety. I would now say that the cheaper specs were a waste of money and I'd have been better off putting the money I spent on them towards buying the Oakleys earlier. FWIW I wear specs all the time when I'm riding to protect my eyes from threats (I've come close to getting a sharp pine branch in my eye in the past and now see glasses as being just as important as a helmet). Just my take on cheap riding glasses.

Polycarbonate is naturally blocks UV so I wouldn't worry about that.

As long as there aren't any sharp edges and they're the right shape for your head you can't go wrong for a quid.

I don't wear glasses very often when riding but have found Bolle safety glasses (and even their mini goggles) to be top notch. Not as cheap as John's tat* but I've only got 2 eyes

*I'm sure they're very nice but I haven't taken the piss out of anything for 27 minutes.

Mark - it doesn’t say what magnification you get from the bottom bit. Any idea from using?

I have the AM version - 27.5" wheels and slightly longer suspension travel.

Colin... so in your opinion, this one is a nice climber/all day bike right?? Find myself wanting to save up for one (short travel full suspension but without going into Salsa Spearfish money/territory) after everything starts returning to normal...

Edit: not saying Orbea are cheap bikes btw... hence adding it to this thread

I have the Orbea Rallon Shaf which is 160mm travel both ends, slack head angle and is not light (despite being carbon and having lots of blingy bits on it) and it rolls and climbs surprisingly well. I should imagine that the Occam is an excellent all day trail bike (particularly if it's a 29er). My bike is in no way an XC bike and there are times when I think I should have gone for the Occam instead but I bought it for riding hard technical stuff and it's excellent for that. My LBS is an Orbea dealer and has one of the 2020 Occams in and it's really nice. Another bike I fancy as a short travel allrounder is the Sonder Cortex but I'd need to get rid of my hardtail bikepacking bike first and it would need to replace that as well.

The TR/29er version should certainly be that. My AM is is "gnar" as my riding skills permit. That means the occasional trail centre jaunt, the more serious local trails, Munro climbs & descents and a couple of bikepacking trips where I've wanted the luxury of full suspension.

Also, the Cairngorm Loops ITT.

The suspension configuration does lend itself to the use of a frame bag, though I've not done so.

Thanks Chris/Colin... I doubt I'd ever be able to climb what i manage on the Sonder HT (amazingly with 140mm upfront but my heart does feel like it's gonna pop) with a 160mm FS. But I do look forward to trying with an appropriate FS.

Let the FS saving begin  (N-1 seems to be falling out the window!)...

There are a number of them but the one I linked to is a 2.0 (?diopter) - other ones are available too I'm sure. Amazon is a bit better that the Bolle website which I find a pain to navigate looking for alternative mags
