Fantasticmrmatt wrote:I know Cuben is a wonder material and super light but it just looks awful.
Surely for the weight difference/workability VX21 or whatever it's called is far better?
Also for Tarps surely Sil Nylon is better and only a few % heavier?
Looks like great work DNF and not trying to piss on your bonfire* as I'm sure at the end of it you'll have the lightest most niche high tech bag in town but for smaller items such as these surely it's the wrong material?
:?:
*All up for playing and making stuff, it's half the fun really :) make stuff, learn and all that.
VX21 weighs according to ExtremTextil 230g/m, this is 'heavy' Cuben at 49g/m, so about 20% of the weight of Vx21. The look is something I'm not over keen on too!
The best thing I have found with Cuben is it's ability to hold a shape. A tarp will weigh about 50% less. The more I'm thinking about the tarp the more I wonder is the effort justified? Issues I see with a tarp revolve around the tension in the guys, glues and tape won't take the pressure, evidence of tearing at 15lb load is low.
But here's the real deal, the Cuben is almost 1.5m wide, And is about £25/m. Now consider that the Terra Nova ultra tarp 1 measures 2.5mx1.5m, cost £280! Work out the maths! It's a ripoff!
Cuben groundsheet for my SilShelter is looking very likely, but using a 19g/m Cuben.
Bag complete weighs 63g, that's for a XL frame, and is a full bag allowing for shock and pivots.
Anyway, it could be a utter disaster and spew it's contents all over Wales! Anyway I've ended up in a strange place of 3g stoves and recycled beer cans!

WOah! lots of posts since i last looked! Sounds like you lot payed a lot of dosh, but from what I read that x=pac/cuban stuff is a bit special - not for my wallet
Anyway , I just wanted to complete my part in this thread, as I wont remember at later date:
Picking the materials took me AGES! I didn't want to spend much on materials (tight feck), especially when I could muck it up. So I went for the cheaper/heavier stuff. saying that, it not heavy, but is water resistant - seems to bead off. im sure things will be used in thin drybags anyway.
1000D Cordura PU coated - 1x1.5m (0.6kg) (still have over half left) - £16.18
http://www.profabrics.co.uk/shop/show_p ... ?id=D10-09
No. 10 Zip - 1m (only needed 0.6m) - £2.75
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI. ... OC:GB:1123
Sew on Velcro 50mm wide - 2m (can be cut down for the 25mm bits) – £2.89 x2m
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI. ... OU:GB:1123
Thread 100% polyester - used a bout 50m!!!!!! - 3x rolls at £2.45 @ local shoppe
Elastic for net pockets 50mm wide, black - 50p per meter
Red netting for pockets - 25p bag from 2nd hand shop
Approx Total = £33 + materials left over
--------------------------------------------------
Total weight: 280g – not much at all for the volume it holds!
Volume: not calculated, but is pretty large
One thing to note is that I create a taper to the bottom of the bag. this stopped it from bulging out. like i've seen on some others.
There are some internal pics detailing the dividers if you want them, just ask...
thanks for reading folk.
dnf, its over to you 8-)

Finished!!
70g final weight changed the strap system but may add another strap, the stuff going in here is ultralight. Fit is perfect, it's larger than a Revelate Tangle bag, which on the scales was 200g. So larger with a 65% weight saving :) If anything this has been a learning curve and I know I can take 20g out of it if I did it again using the 49g/m cuben, I actually have a idea for a ridiculous light frame bag. I'm talking 40-50g full frame bag on a hardtail 20" frame
I'm not going to depress myself on costing

I did it! Is all I personally care about currently! Will it work?? Who knows! If I finish the bike it will get tested this weekend.

Fascinating - looks vaguely insectoid - a little glistening chrysalis.

Great effort DNF. New boundaries in frame bag making have been cut before our very eyes (and stuck together again with tape and glue). Well done. Look forward to seeing it at the WRT :)

Tape & glue, it sounds so Blue Peter! The tape, isn't actually tape, this is worth knowing as when applied a glue strip goes on the backing comes off leaving a pure glue strip, no carrier material/tape!
More cuben is being shipped

Of course, it will be at WRT

actually need to finish the bike now; bleed brakes, figure out shock pressure, tubeless conversion, etc.

Trail Designs Caldera Keg F with Meths (3 days volume) in supplied caddy 296g
Trail Designs Caldera Keg F with Meths (3 days volume) in MYOG cuben bag also with GSI pot grabber, the whole cook setup - 206g
Stuff bags, etc. are easy work using the tape the most difficult part is fitting the eyelet, the tool supplied in the kit is shockingly bad!

Hope you don't use those scales in the kitchen?
They're filthy.

Didnothingfatal your bag looks great
The costing for my bag was 25 inc p&p for enough material to make two bags. I dont have an electric scales so I will have to visit sainsburys to use the scales on the self serve machine.
Mine is water resistant but it did let some water in on the test ride so I will have to use in conjunction with some drybags or ziplocks

DNF - would you care to speculate your total bike+gear weight for WRT?

Everyone's a comedian, I booked two b&b's JIC

I'll just sleep there, come back Monday and you'll see a Gps track of 400k
Now trying to explain to the new girlfriend, that it's normal to spend hours making bags, her face when I explained Tuesday night was out because WRT gear needed to be tested, but she was welcome to tag along was interesting.
So much gear to refine in 4 weeks! Where did the last 11 months go? Better get it dialled in as WRT is the last chance to really test some bits before summer

Currently low for gear, my bike ain't ever go to be as light as yours, I have to have big frames. Plus if we had the same products, mine weigh more just to fit! Final setup will be weather dependent.
Currently loading a Ultralight hiking app with gear weights and making pick lists of gear to get weight.
Weight, ultimately it will be what it will be! What worries me was how much that cost! Target weight of around 7kg including, bag weights, food and water is my target limit.

So what weight are we aiming to smash for a 'Super Ultralight Setup'? I'm not bothering even to get my bike weighed at the start, no point, I reckon your Pegasus weighs 7pound lighter to start with.

Sub 30 lb?
(excluding water and food)

Weights at the weigh in are to include everything that you'll be riding out the field gate with. i.e. bike, bags, contents and helmet.
No stashing food and water down the hill.
You have been warned.

Haha count me out my new bike is getting on weighing that bare!

but will be fast and comfortable
Food weighs not much, powders and huge amounts of granium1-3 are the foods of choice

should be twitching nicely by Monday!
Water, Wales is covered in the stuff.
