Interest registered too Dave - I have been aiming to have a crack at the Cairngorms Loop for the last two years and this would be a big help (and some new lungs too but not sure you can the those on microSD card). Happy to test out the 'gorms Loop in the early Spring if it helps.

I really hope to have these maps nailed before Xmas with all the main loops on there.

1) If I did this and included all of the UK ITT's would there be any interest? Let's be clear I am NOT going to sell these maps, they will be completely free BUT I ain't hosting them either, as they will end up at 1Gb+ for UK coverage. Maybe someone else could do this, or sell SD cards with the maps on, or we have some sort of model where we each agree to copy and pass on a card (like giffgaff) ?

More than happy to host them. Got plenty of boxes and bandwidth isn't an issue for me. Happy to throw together a quick page to let people just download one of them or all of them, too.

If I used these on a Garmin 800 then I wouldn't create a course for a route (big time saving and I find putting them on the device a pain as they don't always show up).

When riding I would just follow the lines. But there would be no off course warning; no stats about distance, time to go; no junction details. However, there would be POI (can I use them on an 800?)

The point being that the map will show the "official" route with no tinkering at all. If I do this I can control how it is displayed and Scotroutes will tell you that I've done it in a way that the map still shows through. I could add route markers as POI's and might have a look at this, but not at the expense of keeping the map uncluttered.

This whole project really is a massive set of trade-offs to try and get something workable. We are hacking away at a map rendering featureset that has been reverse engineered as Garmin are in no hurry to release it.

Indeed!

FWIW, the track marker shows up as a nice clear red in Basecamp, but a rather faint yellow on my Oregon.

I am still labouring away on these.

Got a bit carried away and decided to add the national cycle network to the maps as well. Oh lordy what a world of pain sorting that data out.

I may have a demo to show at the FF.

Dave - you after any more feedback on the HTR "sample" you sent me? I've been over it a couple of times and can't really find anything else to add to what I previously wrote. As above, the only issue I've experienced is that the route itself seems to show as a rather insipid yellow on my Garmin Oregon.

Is the yellow a setting in the garmin, or is it something hard coded into the file?

As far as I can tell, it's not something I can change with the Garmin as it's "on the map".

I am sorting that thanks scotroutes, trying a few different ways of rendering it. The problem you are seeing is that the garmin has it stuck in "night mode".

this is an interesting project, I'm in the central belt of Scotland if that helps at all, with checking things out.

Oooh I am interested in this too - I have 2 gb available in a drop box i can make a shared folder so that everyone can copy it off if that is any use?

Aaaaaghhh, What's a "gram-bit"

b = bit (basic unit of information in computing, only commonly used by internet service providers - and computing nerds.)
B=byte (8 bits, see above, but the more common unit of computing storage used with prefix kilo, mega, giga etc. as appropriate)

G=Giga (i.e. x 10^9)
g = gram (unit of mass)

Sorry this gets on my tits as an engineer (misuse of units that is)
