Revamped disc trucker - more tyre, high front end, and neat through axle system. Kind of bike I tend to look at and then plan a trip around.....

I've got a disc trucker but for some reason I just can't love it. I've tried all manner of things but so far we've not properly bonded. It's a cracking bike so maybe it's just me.

I've never ridden one but I suspect it would be like a mates Thorn - very competent but not very engaging. Looks like they have tried to tweak the DT to make it a bit more sprightly.

That's probably it Phil. It does everything asked of it but somehow it just feels kind of dead or at least muted.

Not new, but new to me and ingenious if you want to run dynamo wires up your steerer tube and have easy faff-access -

Image

https://www.intend-bc.com/products/ahead-caps/smarty/

All you need to add is a 10mm spacer that extends 5mm+ above the steerer top, with some U-channels/cuts filed into the top so the wires can exit under the cap (checking you don't pinch them as it's all tightened up of course..). I use this method on one bike but with a modified carbon steerer expander bung, problem is it collapses in on itself slightly under pressure.

(If only they made one in 1" ... back to filing out that star nut)

I cant remember what it was on my shand but iirc it was similar and then the wires ran straight to the usb top cap thing, ace set up , shame I had to sell the bike as i just couldn't get comfortable on it, turned out it wasnt even the bike but an old motorbike accident injury I hadn't even realised was causing an issue boohoo...

It's significantly less pretty , but also a load cheaper than that rather lovely system... I was wondering if a BMX hollow bolt star nut would do the same job for dynamo cables.

Could do for one cable I expect. There's not much space though, not enough to get the end connectors through so you'd need to wire in connectors either side of it for future servicing, of cut and re-fit. I've just filed larger cut-outs in a star nut this time, checked the connectors can pass through and all's OK. Left it right near the top of the fork in case it needs cutting out in future.

I used one of these (Mick, it's prob the same as the Shand) https://www.performancebike.com/superno ... 1x/p317861
I got mine for ~£15 -same item from a different seller, forget who/where now- but the cut out section starts to bend in on itself after a while. There's a compression load on the tapered top section that relies on that vertical compression for the wedge action.

^ yeah... I like what they're doing in principle but it's a lot of money, going to be really low-volume stuff.

I had this pop up in a news feed

https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/prod ... ate-459020

A two speed rear hub to use with a cassette to get a 2x gearing. Interesting idea but a lot of tech to avoid having a front mech.

Ohh, that's nice bit of kit, you can have 3 x 9 using the hub and a single front ring. I guess you could have 3 x 3 x 9 if you put a triple on but just trying to think about what ratios that would produce is making my brain hurt :???:

Chater Lea....
The company was in Letchworth garden city.
I always liked Chater Lea components, lovely stainless steel.
As a kid I remember a few local guys having bikes with campagnolo components and Chater Lea .
Both attractive in their own way.
Quite heavy though, not for weight weenie's!
The building still exists in works road.
I believe they did broaching before they disappeared.
They made motorcycles too!
Any ideas where the new company is based?

Thats what I've been using on the other bike, they don't hold up too well ime. May work better in Al steerer than steel?

One of many firms pre-war who made there own frames and cycle parts and used a proprietry engine such as a Blackburne or Jap. Quite nice things but didn't make it beyond the war.
