I think this is my fourth pair. They don't make them any more and I snapped these up as soon as I saw them on t'bay.

I managed to buy a new pair of MT91's just before they became largely unavailable (in my size) Hoping my old ones last round the HT then will probably start using the new ones which should see me out

With...eventually...2 new rims from Light bicycle. I ordered them yonks ago but they had to be made to order. They have system which lets you see each step of the process so you know what's going on. Posted on Friday last week so pretty quick delivery. Maximum negative air mile karma however....

Anyway they look good, just need to do some wheelbuilding now.

a Pedalcell Dynamo



Been looking for a reasonably priced used one for a while. Like, 2 years? Patience paid off.

I swap between two bikes for bikepacking and while I thought about getting a dynamo wheel it would be tough as both bikes have front 15mm axles and supposedly this is better anyway.

Need to go try it out now!

FWIW i have a 15 mm dynamo hub on a 21 mm rim.so its ok.for road gravel and mtb ( withing reason ) but interested in a review of the above.

Will do, only had a chance to test fit today - hopefully get an initial ride tomorrow morning but am leaving to ride my 125 Monkey bike to Sweden at 9am so that's a tight schedule!

So with this one are you able, how shall we say, to satisfy your urges one-handed? Sometimes mine goes all floppy (*) when I try to manipulate it which means I have to bring the other hand into play as well.

In the end I don't really mind having to do a two-hander job because it means I have an excuse to stop and chill .

(*) Mainly because I got mine custom-made by AK out of LS21 so it's superlight and therefore a bit more flexi. To counteract this I've lined it with old milk container. Which, ahem, renders the lightweightedness slightly less marked. Still lighter than standard AK one though.

...with a couple of those schwalbe clik valve adaptors and a pair of normal tubeless valves from Decathlon. The full schwalbe valves seem to be un-obtainable and £25 whereas the adaptors and the decathlon valves were £20. Tomorrow I will mostly be building gravel wheels!

I am currently on the Danish island of Bornholm, out in the Baltic Sea as part of a 125cc Monkey bike tour of Scandinavia.

We're camped about 10km out of the town and borrowed some sit-up and beg style bikes to cycle in to town for the smoked fish buffet.
My bike had a front hub dynamo and a 7 speed Nexus rear hub gear setup.
The drag was horrendous! Like riding an eBike with the motor off.
The bike was surprisingly light too (Alu frame and fork). I think the drag was from the dynamo...

Didn't feel anything like it from the pedalcell.

Old tyre dynamos have even worse drag than the hub ones.

I borrowed this cracker of a bike tonight from our campsite in Sweden to take a supply run into town and have a pint.



Gave the dynamo a test and realised why the bike didn't have a front brake, just use the dynamo!

Measure all the things! Apropos of this, back when I was a student studying 3D design in the early 90s there was a TV ad for, I dunno, a watch brand or something which had a voiceover starting "the eye of a craftsman is more accurate than any laser". We wasted countless hours speculating on the dimensions of just about anything in the studio and then confirming our accuracy (or not) with a pair of calipers.

I worked as a land surveyor for a while too, and we did much the same there, anticipating and then using the theodolite to confirm that the litter bin actually was 78.2 metres away.

... and bought me a cheap (£6.99) collapsible walking stick, no, I don't need one for walking but I do often need a weed whacker. I hate stinging nettles and this time of the year often hit overgrown sections and never seem to be able to find a suitable stick to beat them back with. It straps on to the top of the Carradice saddle bag and seems fairly robust. I guess it could also be useful to fend of aggressive dogs (or humans!) ... not that I've ever felt particularly threatened by a dog, but know plenty of folks who have.

3 items from decathlon

One of those dry, tapered bags with a valve on it for my wildcat saddle harness. It’s big! Does roll down though and after quite a few rolls, seems to fit ok Proper thick dry bag fabric too

Two feed bags from their range too, they’re quite small.
Think a 650ml bottle friendly size rather than a Nalgene bottle sized, but should be ok for food bits etc

Prompted by the micro chair thread I searched around and today my Vango version arrived in the post, bit more weighty than I was expecting but seems sturdy enough!

Postlady brought a new tent. Thanks to Mr G for highlighting the Wild Country Coshee micro tent. Better than the tent I already have, saving 250grams!

Separately, thanks to Stu for posting the Tamarack Outdoors link. Compression dry sack for my down sleeping bag.

Finally OS paper map of the local area, using their custom map maker. Ideal for those local adventures but mainly because I fancied it!
