3 days to France and back

Post by tonyb »

Hi I'm after a few tips ,I'm planning to ride from West Sussex to Dover then spend a day riding to somewhere in France then back again over 3/4 days. Probably stay in b&b and hoping to get a decent amount of off road in the mix ,toying with heading to roubaix

Any riding in France tips ,any suggested routes

Thanks in advance

Have a look at the Newhaven > Dieppe ferry or Portsmouth > St Malo

Maybe not Roubaix but Reg looked like he enjoyed himself

I did this route the other week http://cycle.travel/map/journey/28570.

We took the road option a couple of times as we were on a mix of cx and road bikes. It's not technical riding. There's a bit of singletrack through the dunes etc and some gravel but mainly just a nice ride along the coast taking in the WW2 landing sites. Plenty of options for wild camping (or normal campsites/b&bs).

Ferry from Portsmouth leaves at 11.30 at night (Thursday) Dumps you in Le Havre for 7.30am on the Friday and then we got the afternoon fast ferry from Cherbourg on the Sunday back to Portsmouth. Worked perfectly.

Thanks for the referral Chew :-). Yep it was a lot of fun. If u go to St Malo the regular ferrybus thing takes you across to Dinard and from the old railway station you're straight onto the "Voie Verte" to ancient town/city of Dinan and onwards: http://www.brittanytourism.com/discover ... ites/dinan. Don't try the road bridge StMalo-Dinard. Portsmouth-StMalo was quite a long boat trip though. Normandy's probably just as good and we may go there next time. French drivers, as mentioned elsewhere, are usually incredibly courteous to cyclists. They're very friendly too :-) ----
