I need a Plan B

Post by JohnClimber »

A mate's cried off with a stomach bug and can't do Snowdon this weekend so I need a paln B

Plan A was Snowdon and a great vid to inspire is here http://ride.io/riding/snowdon-overnighter/

My problem is I've got the weather window (forecast looks great) and most importantly I've got a pass from the wife from 11am Saturday until around 2pm on Sunday.

So what/where should I ride and bivi an hour or two's drive away from Merseyside?

If it helps I've got a fat bike for beach riding.

Please help

Me and a fast mate are riding Penmachno in the afternoon.

Driving to Llanberis meal at Pete's Eats

Ride/push to the summit, light weight bivi at the summit

Ride down, breakfast at Pete's Eats

The Marin trail on the way home

But we are taking full camping gear (in the car) just incase the weather changes and a lower level bivi is needed

It will be good to ride with you, hopefully you can give us some bivi tips before we leave.

Have you ridden Snowdon before?

I'm taking pads for the down as we arn't sure if we are going to come down the way up or down the Ranger Path.

We rode Snowdon back in March, great day out.

Best option if you wanted to do Rangers is to start at the YHA at the bottom of the rangers path, up and over towards Llanberris, and then up. Then down Rangersin the morning. Not sure if i'd want to do Rangers with gear though, its a bit patchy in places :? But you only live once....

I know what you mean about being loaded up for the rangers, we will most proberbly go down the way we went up hence the llanberis start.

Have you seen this video? http://ride.io/riding/snowdon-overnighter/

Watching it now.

For Rangers it can always be a call in the morning, as you can always get back over.

See you tomorrow.

The weather window looked excellent, and it was all systems go. The push up to the top was easier than i remember. Didnt really fancy using using my harness on the down, as i thought it would affect the handling too much, so its was everything on my back this time.

A bit of carrying and we all got to the top just before sunset.

Image

Bivi options on top are fairly limited. The veranda at the front of the cafe is an option and would have been good to watch the sunset and stars, but the wind was picking up, so the best option was was to shelter behind the cafe. Not the easiest of bivi's for the others who hadnt bivied before, with the low cloud, and wind, but we all got through the night until the walkers started to get to the summit.

Image

After that it was just a case of packing up and heading off to the cafe for a fryup and a brew.

You can park for free in llanberis on the main road through the town. Plenty of spaces and should be fairly safe. Less options on the rangers side, only a pay and display at the bottom, but wouldn't fancy leaving my car there overnight. Theres a village/pub a few miles south which was fine when I used it back in march.
Would imagine the number of walkers on a mid week morning would be minimal.

I always end up feeling somehow let down at Petes Eats ... pint mugs of tea are obviously an exception. ;)
