For those that aren't taking a change of clothes, what clothing choices have you made? Baggies or bibs? Merino tops /undies?
Bamboo for me, in the form of a T shirt and a short sleeved shirt. I figure if it's hot, a button up shirt will be much nicer to wear than something tight fitting.

So I don't scare the wildlife, I will have a pair of Altura baggies on. They're lightweight, well vented and dry quickly should I feel the need to rinse them through.

I get the whole bikepacking paring down thing but, like everyone else, I have a comfort level. Below that I'd start feeling a bit hairshirty. To me, a trip of more than 3 or 4 days that isn't a race or against the clock requires a change of riding gear to clear the low comfort bar required for an enjoyable trip. I know I could get by without them but it's a choice not to. I'm new to this bikepacking lark and right now I'd rather come back with things I didn't need to take than trucking about berating myself for not having the things I have the capacity to carry. It's a personal thing and that's probably the important bit, to do what's right for you.
Very true. Every kit decision is simply a matter of balancing and minimising compromise ... and that can only be done at a personal level.

Stu's bags are TARDIS like though.

Many a bothy have we wondered where the kit came from after seeing his bike.

Without fail though is the magic bacon roll that seems to appear from nowhere completely un-squished ??

I have just been checking the weight of my loaded bike and the box I intend to pack it into for the Ryanair flight to Turin and
it is getting close to the 20kg limit, excess baggage charge per kilo is £10 !!

I am OK thanks Stu just wanted to give others a heads up, not a good start if you get hit for £40 !
Surprisingly the box weighs 3kg.
I will be taking my lights,Garmin and some other bits I don't want thrown around in my hand luggage.

Been lurking here for sometime and It's been great reading everybody's thoughts and plans. Certainly looking forward to hearing how everyone gets on.

Gutted that I am not going to be able to do the ride this year due to not having enough holiday left to get the time off work. Definitely on my list for 2017 if it goes ahead again.

Are you sure it's 20kg, it's normally 30kg for bikes. I've flown twice with Ryanair this year and had no issues with bike being over 20kg.

Andy - isnt it 30kg?
https://www.ryanair.com/gb/en/useful-in ... conditions

Just get yourself a bag-for-life and carry on as much as possible. Carried all of my gear on board to Tuscany and no one batted an eye lid.

Just make sure you put tools etc in the box.

Yep, quite sure and don't think you can take that electric bike either ;)

Sporting or musical equipment including but not limited to large fishing rods, golf clubs, bikes* (bikes have a weight limit of 30 kilos), scooters, fencing equipment, pole vaults, javelin, surfboards, bodyboards, snowboards and skis and large musical instruments including but not limited to harps, double bass and drums are inherently unsuitable for carriage by airlines operating fast turnarounds such as Ryanair. However, these items may be carried in the hold of the aircraft in addition to your personal checked baggage allowance up to a limit of 20 kilos per item. Fees apply, click here for details.
Any sporting and musical item weighing over the 20 kilos allowance will be charged for the excess at the applicable excess baggage rate per kilo.
* Bicycles - MUST be contained in a protective box or protective bike bag in order to be accepted for travel. Electric bicycles cannot be transported by plane.

I did exactly the same as Dave and got the same response so 30kg is OK with no charge.
Having said that my bike and box is under 20kg and it is staying that way

Still haven't decided on cooking gear or not but for those needing gas, there's 4 decathlons in/around Turin. Not certain but that should solve the can i get screw threaded canisters?

My plans have changed again and I'm now driving down from Chamonix on Monday.

If anyone wants any gas, meths, craft beer* etc... then just let me know (today/Saturday ideally) so I can go shopping.

Cheers, Gairy.

*obviously only kidding about the craft beer, I presume everyone has already discovered for themselves that there's a great looking craft beer shop in central Turin, no?

Flown with them twice this year with the road bike. Both times I asked the smiley lady if she wanted to weigh the bike box. I had "no need, as long as you can lift it" at Heathrow and "you can just tell me how much it weighs, as long as it's not over 23 kilos it's OK..." at Toulouse. No guarantees but I wouldn't expect you'll have any bother..

The superfluous kit cull went well and I've managed to ditch the frame bag. Might need the world tiniest rucksack but only for daily sandwiches and pastries so nothing I'll really notice wearing.

Lots of last minute flapping today, with less than 20 hours until flight from Brizzle to Nice.

Still fiddling with the bike - it's first 200 miles last weekend revealed a lot of 'issues'; uncomfortable saddle, Rohloff with only 13 gears, shoes splitting, excessive braking vibrations, dynamo woes (why did I bother?), and lots of unidentified squealing, although some of that could have been in my head!

As for kit choice...
- Will their be midges/mosquitoes?
- Is 1600ml of water enough to get between reliable, potable sources?
- Are running shorts (in)appropriate 'evening wear' for hostels, etc?

Expect I will just take the minimum to get by and wing it, as usual.

Winged-teeth: not likely many but down in the valleys if you're near water, sure, you'll get some.

1600ml: Dunno but I'm taking 1500ml and hoping it'll be fine.

Shorts: I've got some running shorts as my evening wear too so at least we'll both look daft!

I did this in the summer when my riding shorts were in the wash. It's fine apart from the cycling tan means there is a bright white band of skin between shorts and lower thigh! You get used to people staring.
