WRT Newbie.

Post by 1kcove »

Thinking of entering WRT this year, not sure what to expect as iv'e never bike packed before i have entered the Brecon Beast a few times so i'm familier with the terrain 85 miles over 3 days sounds quite fesable
i also have a Garmin Eurex 30 but i will have to puchase a sleeping bag, bike bags etc, i own a 29er full susser but was thinking of using my Niner SIR9. I follow lots of Bike Packing blog's etc as i'm really keen in getting involved & i will have to start somewhere, would you think this event is more catered for the experienced Bike Packer? the other question is am i likely to be riding mainly on my own or do people tend to tag along with one another. Any advise & tips would be most appreciated . :-bd

When I did it last year I had done precisely one night out bikepacking before. If anything I'd say this is one of the best ways to start as you can always hook up with a friendly group (or the lonely hearts club) who will no doubt help you with anything you need to know.

Chew and I tend to have two lonely hearts club going and we cross paths quite often on our routes.
100 miles or so for the weekend seems to be the norm.
Pace isn't fast but it's not glacial either. Somewhere inbetween but nobody gets left behind.

If you're going on your own and its your first time, definitely go with the LHC. Last year was my first time. I was very well looked after my mine hosts and had an excellent time, great company and superb riding!
Might even tag along with them this year if I can't drum any trade up at my end!

One of the things that comes across most often when talking to those riding for the first time, is just how friendly everyone is. There's no elitism or clique, everyone's there for exactly the same reason and no one cares whether you ride 200 miles or 20. I really do think the WRT is unique in its format and atmosphere. In my opinion, it makes a very good introduction and an ideal place for the bug to truly bite

There is no standard course, it's quite feasible (though not likely) that everyone could go somewhere different  If you want to join the LHC you'll be signing up for the full fat WRT.

I'm starting to get the picture, so i could ride with the LHC for the full duration also thinking i would't have to plot a course as i will be with people who obviously no where there going & perhaps won't get lost, correct me if i'm wrong. Trust me i will most defiantly do some research on kit, nutrition etc & check the Forum nearer the event. Thanks.

That's pretty much it ... although they still may become mis-placed from time to time

You can join the South Coast posse if you want, much better than hanging out with Northerns or the Welsh!
