Look on the brightside, only another 2749 rides of 2750 miles before you have an vaguely exciting score!

You are correct.

It is length only and obviously longer rides are easier on road and with sympathetic terrain.
So useless then :-bd

for all but self comparison, that is

Mine is 70 miles / 102km which I can't quite understand, there is approx 6 mile or 10km difference there. If I do everything I hope to do in 2016 I hope to reach 75 miles.

Like DaveW I have been looking at my explorer score and improved from 7x7 to 10x10 with two rides of about 60 miles total. Another ride of about 40 miles took me up to 14x14 and now and again I am going out to do a rogue grid square. One I need to do is down a 1.5 miles dead end which is why I have never bothered riding down there - but I did attend a wedding at the pub at the end of the road. 9,165 tiles ridden to date but loads of missing rides from 2012 and 2013 in France and USA.

70 miles on 70 occasions is actually quite different to 102km on 102 occasions :-)

My metric one is 75.

All time is 62 imperial and 84 metric

My yearly score is (imperial)
2012 - 38
2013 - 39
2014 - 40
2015 - 39

I've done more miles this year than previous years, but clearly more shorter rides - it's an interesting metric but I need to work out whether a high score is always better.

It's all very subjective.

100 centuries (score 100) is pretty impressive but how about 50 weeks where you've ridden 30 miles per day (score 30) is that equally impressive?

I like the explorer metric, not seen that before as it's not easy to find. Mine is a magnificent 3x3  Finding trails or roads to fill in some of the gaps might be interesting but might not be easy in the Dales.

Similar problem here in Aviemore (and, I suspect, most of the Highlands). Definitely a lowlanders sport (7x7)

I guess all the little Devon lanes help with the explorer metric, as I've got 10x10! I have been on a mission lately to ride new stuff on every ride too.

Thanks for explaining the bleedin' obvious Dave. I just didn't see it that way but of course that is the explanation.

Most of these big miles date back to 2012/13 as the last year or so I have been doing less miles but tried to a number of them faster. I have not checked my stats closely but I would say I have not done a handful of rides in the 90-120km distance but have done 13 rides of ~200km or above. So either long or faster.

From the popup when you hover your mouse over "Explorer metric" on the summary page it seems like it's based on whether you've passed through a "level 14" tile on Google Maps. Level 14 probably refers to the zoom level and is a bit less than a square Km from looking at the coverage.

I've got 9x9 but I see two really obvious gaps of 3 squares each that should give me 12x12.

Go to the Activities tab, click on the "Map" button on the right (it's red and the middle one of three), then check the "Explorer" box beneath the map.

Hmm, being hemmed in between the Broads and the North Sea is cramping my style a bit!

39 miles, 63 km - but that's only going as far back as 2013. Must try to get my old data out of BikeJournal.

ETA: 01/01/2007 - 01/01/2016 Metric = 112, Imperial = 89. :-bd

Paid up for pro veloviewer after our conversation at the weekend. Imperial Eddington = 93 since 2009  but almost entirely road miles

Good, innit? Too much info, really. Just split my 600km + audaxes into individual days - Metric e = 118, Imperial e = 93 (which is odd, because I'm sure you've ridden more long rides than me, but I guess if you had the numbers prior to 2009 yours would go up a bit).

Looking at the data, I've done ~90 200k+ audaxes since 2009. So getting to an imperial Eddington of 125-130 seems possible in the next year or two, but beyond that my number of rides drops dramatically...135 300k+ audaxes? Not in my lifetime.

Oh, and I made it to 94 with yesterdays 128 miler
