An appeal to Bear Boners

Post by Dave Barter »

Don't worry it's nothing to do with charity.

Chicken Legs and I are now committed to the CS LeJog. Our schedule looks like this:-

Mon 12th October ~ 60 miles NEWQUAY

Tue 13th October 110 miles BARNSTABLE

Wed 14th October miles NAILSEA

Thu 15th October 90 miles BRECON

Fri 16th October 100 miles WELSHPOOL

Sat 17th October 117 miles WEST KIRBY

Sun 18th October 113 miles GAWTHROP

Mon 19th October 110 miles ANNAN

Tue 20th October 110 miles ARDROSSAN

Wed 21st October 95 miles TAYNULT

Thu 22nd October 76 miles MALLAIG

Fri 23rd October 81 miles CONTIN

Sat 24th October 110 miles MELVICH

Sun 40 miles FINISH

As a reminder the route is here http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=lxtzdnunmipvioai

We are looking to do it as lightweight as possible and may try and use accommodation on the way. Not sure yet if this can work, BUT if you know of somewhere cheap near any of the towns/hamlets shown then can you let me know. Or maybe you have a shed that will house two wet, muddy (and one sweary), CX riders. If we can find enough options we may leave the bags and shelters behind. Remember we're doing it in October and a few sections may be challenging. The mileages may look straightforward but remember that we have at max 11 hours of light each day. It puts a bit more pressure on to ride at a slightly higher pace and consequently ride less encumbered.

Any help, pointers, advice, offers of a kip gratefully received.

If the two of you are near Shrewsbury (20 miles from Welshpool)...you can kip on the floor here. I'll provide the beer.

Sat 17th October 117 miles WEST KIRBY

On the Saturday afternoon I could meet you on the banks of the Mersey or on the Wirral and guide you to mine near Aintree (30 mins of flat canal tow paths off your route) then guide you to Southport the morning afterwards either on my suggested route or on your original Cheshire Lines ride cutting out the coast but still off road.

Let me know if that fit's in and I'll ask the wife for you to overnight indoors here 1 double bed and a sofa bed. (Wish me luck)

I'm near Leeds which you seem to be avoiding. I think the best I can do is to wish you luck

We can offer you tea and refuel stop in Chester if it helps? It's probably around an hour or so from johnclimber and I can guide you to the meet up point too.

Had you been venturing into BB land, a warm welcome, hot meal and a bed would have been on hand but you're not, so they won't ... however, I feel that by undertaking absolutely no part whatsoever in your route planning, I may already have done you the biggest service possible
May the bridges you burn light your way

Dave I'm about 10 minutes from West Kirkby if John's offer falls through you'd be welcome at ours we've got spares rooms and decent storage

Failing that I might just ride with you for a bit if you're after company!
Wait for me...

No space to put you up for the night at ours, but as I said on the twitter thingy I should be able to feed you. Cheapest accommodation nearby involves carrying on for either the Brodick or Lochranza YH, but I'm assuming from Ardrossan being your intended destination that either the timings don't work out for the boat or you didn't fancy the Boguille last thing (or at all since you're going over the String).

Also, NCN 73 is diverted due to them repairing the promenade between Stevenston & Saltcoats. Instead of turning left towards the railway level crossing in Stevenston, you're now either going straight on before taking the second right towards the main road...
...or ignoring the right turn and carrying straight on for a splashy bit of old railway line/filled in canal (I can't remember which offhand) next to the golf course.

Thanks deft punk for the food offer, may be in touch but not yet worked out timings for that section. As you say there is a possibility we could make the boat.

Oh, and knob + balls on the map is always a bonus ;-)

Dave just back from Scotland trip..... Look out for a sign I made you once ur up around arisaig I used your section of trail to cut out some of the rd, its really nice riding there! Be aware Dave that the section of rd from borrowdale house off main A830 to the cottage at 688 850 doesnt actually exist on the ground ul save time by turning off the main rd at the junction for Druimindarroch. It will make sense when ur there mate
