What width are people running their bars?

Post by Ray Young »

Been useing Mary bars for ages but decided to try something wider so got some standard fleegles at 720mm. I only have the one bike so it gets used for general off roading are well as bikepacking. What width are people running their bars at? Should I try them at 720mm first or should i cut them down a bit straight away as they seem pretty wide? Is there a formula for working out an optimum width taking shoulder width into account?

I have full width Fleegles on my Swift. They feel pretty much perfect to me but then they are the narrowest bars I have.

I'd say try riding them full width first. You may want to try them with a shorter stem, though - say 10-20mm shorter than you're used to with Marys.

Thats how I work it Ray not much wider than shoulder width, I don't want to turn my arms & chest into a kite.

Ive just checked my Inbred & Blue Pig and their 660mm & 690mm respectively. I wouldn't go any wider than 690mm for me anyway :???:

You could run them with lock on grips for a while, set at different widths to see what you prefer. Start wide and slowly narrow down, or vice versa? Cut once your happy if needed.

Dependant on which type of grips you use, you can always move them in with your brakes & shifter(s) to simulate where you'd cut them down to until you find a comfortable position & then chop (or not chop) away! :-bd

I've got the same 760mm flat bars on my two HTs, the FS and my Fatty.

Perfect for me but I'm 6'2".

Think I'll run them full width to start with. I have bolt up grips so can move therm in/out until I find the best length. Thanks for all the input.

I have mine at 640mm on both my main MTBs. As well as what you're comfortable with I guess it's what you get used to; I've been riding since the days of ridiculously narrow bars so it's what I'm used to. I've also grown up riding in the woods where narrow has distinct advantages. Wider bars would seem to suit more recent interpretations of MTBing!
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

Just had a quick look and the fleegles are going to add 20-30mm per side so I reckon fitting them uncut is the way to go.

Thanks very much for the offer Chew but I have already bought some, couldn't resist the price as they are on sale.
