Seam Sealer ... thin down or not?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

As title really ... what's the general opinion when applying seam sealer on silnylon, straight out of the bottle or thin it down a bit?

No idea.(ever so helpful)

Where do you get a "bottle" from?

I've only seen the little tubes from tent repair kits.

The Siltarp had a sewn loop in it's centre that dripped in bad rain. I just rubbed a little bathroom sealant into the threads with my finger :D

Not a good idea over a larger amount, it worked but it's not pretty!

I seem to remember you thin it with white-spirit but I guess it depends on what the instructions say?

Don't thin it down, apply neatly as a thin layer with a small brush (supplied?)

Good timing as my new MLD bivy bag came with a couple of tubes of Seam Grip that I'm going to be applying soon. From what I can tell, as Ian has said, undiluted and using a small brush is the way forward.

It's a fairly mind-numbing task, and probably took me a good 45 minutes to do my z-packs tarp.

Started doing my bivy bag last night. I'm in the "it's bloody boring" camp! Having said that, I have no idea how it took some bloke 5 hours to do his. Mine should be done in around 2. A small brush and a bit of patience seems to be working ok.
