Ebay bargain SolarStorm X2 light arrived this morning to replace my broken MagicShine MJ872.

I doubt the beam will be as good (the MagicShine is a superb light for the money IMO) but at least the old battery fits so I now have a spare.

Since my 2 road bikes got stolen last summer, i'd replaced my nice road bike but held off getting a winter bike which meant i've ridden less miles than usual as I haven't wanted to wreck my carbon road bike (I came close on one frosty morning- bending the rear hanger and was shocked when I saw how much a SRAM Red derailleur was if it had not have been just a hanger). I finally took the plunge but wanted something a bit different so i'd still have the urge to ride the carbon bike rather than riding the comfy winter bike all the time. I also wanted something I could tour and bike pack on. So, now that's the N+1 justified......

Collected it from Halfords yesterday. £599 but got it for around £465 with 10% special this week, another 10% for British Cycling and 3% cash back with Quidco. Took a little bit to set it up this morning but after taking it out for a spin this afternoon, i'm really pleased. About 1mph slower than my carbon road bike on my normal road loop, even with the Schwalbe Tyrago tyres. Got some 25c Vittoria tyres to go on but not sure i'll bother as it's quick enough and leaves some off road options available. Very happy :-bd

That Boardman looks a great deal. I have a carbon road bike that I use once or twice a year that I should probably sell to get one of those...

Thanks both. I'm looking forward to getting out on some long rides on it. Think it'll be ideal for some sustrans touring and fast over nighters.

Oh interesting to see Heather is doing that, rode with her in several events over the years. Very strong rider.

It's very nice, I'm liking the long side zip. Not convinced I'll fit my mat inside but I'll have a play later.

Packs down to nothing. Very similar to a Borah really but I wanted a sewn in hood and a longer zip which I'm sure John at Borah could have done for me but these were on the shelf.

I liked the look of the MLD Soul but these look similar and much cheaper... although I suppose the MLD ones are actually waterproof on top (Event).

I think that's something people often forget, most of the ultralight bivvy bags from the US are really very breathable, water resistant sleeping bag covers. If you're using a tarp or can be assured of a dry night they take some beating for price / weight / pack size.

Press fit is silly. I understand the concept and why (not that manufacturers mention the cost saving), but from a serviceability point of view they're pants.
