Wild camping Italy... Help and advice please...

Post by Giacomo »

I'm planning a cycling trip around Italy with my girlfriend this summer.

We intend to start at lake como (we will be in that area anyway) and head South towards Genova, then along the coast cutting inland towards Florence and on to Ancona... Roughly...

We were planning on bivying wild for the most part of our trip, however this is illegal in Italy. If we get there and bivying is not n option, campsites are out of our budget. So we're a bit concerned really about whether this is achievable or if we will just be constantly worried about finding somewhere to sleep every night... And worse, being moved on... Or fined.

Has anyone got any experience of bikepacking/touring in Italy and wild camping?

Thanks in advance!

I had no idea it was illegal when I did it???

I always keep a low profile and so had no trouble at all.

Sure you'd be fine.

No experience of Italy sorry, but we'll be wild-camping there this summer. It's illegal in France too, or so I was told after spending a number of nights bivi-ing in France. I've been woken up at 1am by the police at a subtle bivi spot in Spain, they just wanted to check we weren't kids using drugs etc! I think it's ok if you're respectful when picking a spot, out of sight and out of mind, stoves not fires, gone early without a trace, no problems.
