Winter project
Not giving myself a time line on this but will hopefully keep me motivated during the winter
-One paper map
-One highlighter
You can see where this is going, any square that I walk or cycle in my leisure (ie not work) gets coloured in. Driving doesn’t count but driving to a place and walking/cycling does.
Guess it’s a bit like veloviewer but an old school version

Re: Winter project
Sounds like an eminetly excellent use of a old landranger map... Might do the same myself, if you don't mind the IP theft??

Re: Winter project
Go for it
I’ve decided to start from scratch rather than use ‘historical memory’ data otherwise I’d just be colouring in most of the sheet

Re: Winter project
What was the starting date? Starting on 1st Dec, i.e. official winter start would make sense given it's a "winter" project.

Re: Winter project
Wish I thought of making the map into a shape/pattern
Yes/no/maybe!! Started a couple of weeks ago, I’m a great believer in starting things when they ‘need’ to start and not until a set date (ie I really dislike new year resolutions for this)whitestone wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 11:51 am What was the starting date? So errr, yes it’s a winter project but started a couple of weeks earlier and it may even run into spring

Re: Winter project
Slow progress but squares are starting to fill up. Just got the annoying part of going back to fill in a few odd squares now

Re: Winter project
Well, that’s pretty much the end of winter. Think I may switch to a different colour for spring and see how it goes.
I thought the area to the east would have seen more colour as I thought I spend a lot of time there, but evidently not this winter
Will have to start heading south on rides now

Good effort, my winter one would look very very local

Update
The Grass up the middle team published a piece on the project
https://grassupthemiddle.com/2023/03/26 ... dventures/
And here’s progress so far (really wish I opted for the 2.25 map…)

Re: Winter project
I read that piece yesterday but had forgotten about this thread. It was a nice piece. I am doing it nu-skool with Veloviewer and grabbed 7 more tiles last weekend.

Re: Winter project
Thanks both. Guess this is like a no frills veloviewer, in fact, that partly what I was thinking when I did it
Re: Winter project
Amazing idea! My kids would love this. Cheers.

Re: Winter project
Sprint is almost over, doesn’t really feel like we’ve had much of a spring but hey ho…
136 squares coloured in (orange) for Spring. It doesn’t look much on the map but quite pleased once I’d counted the squares up. It’s obviously getting harder and harder to colour in sections and when I can, less and less are getting coloured in!
Roll on the summer

Re: Winter project
Summer is done, 135 squares this season (136 in spring and 250 in the winter edition). Roll on Autumn…
Will need to get some longer road rides in on the gravel bike to get more squares!
Spring edition concentrated on Bishop Bennett’s Way. Spent most of June looking and exploring it, working out which paths were good and which were completely overgrown. Believe the council aren’t keen to maintain the way which is a shame as historically I’ve been informed, it was a popular route
Summer is blue (winter was purple and spring was orange). Got three squares over the weekend, so Autumn has been started!

Re: Winter project
Final update for the year/this map I started a little early so I’ll finish a little early…
So figures then…
Winter 250 squares (the season I started)
Spring 136
Summer 134
Autumn 84 (I was ill for one month or so!)
Grand total of 604 squares, I reckon there are 72 sqauares that are easily inaccessible (coast/marsh) etc so that’s a total of 1528 possible squares (this doesn’t include private land etc as I can’t be arsed working that out).
So, 604 out of 1528 (which is 8 squares short of 40% coverage).
Got a custom map for next year, so some ‘new’ areas to explore
